Spent the day at my old stomping grounds at Joe’s Pub at The Public yesterday. As part of my role on the Joe’s Pub Council, I participated in a series of speed meetings with the current Joe’s Pub Working Group artist cohort. I loved being a part of a different artist development program and seeing what it shared and how it differed from The Arts Center’s Numoo program. Very poised group of artists and terrific conversations with them and the other guests in the meetings.
Was happy to get to see a new show by Julian Fleisher, on of the first artists I met at Joe’s Pub 25 years ago, sounding great, dressed like (as he described “a gay Batman villain”), bringing out NPR’s Ira Glass for a special duet. And at Pub director Alex Knowlton’s encouragement, we stayed for the second show, Hole!, a two-person musical theater piece by American Sing-Song (ASS) which will likely not make it to the UAE, but returns to EdFringe this summer. Super entertaining, well-structured and lean music theater Hole! is an epic love story set in the apocalyptic aftermath of The Great Sucking, when the only people left on Earth are the fanatical Nebraskans. (I’ve already said too much).
I felt very lucky to be in town when the Saami Brothers performed at a private mehfil in the stunning home of Clara Aich. They opened globalFEST this year, but I never see more than 10-15 minutes of any set at our festival, so it was great to finally experience how they capture and transform the energy in a space. Congrats to Josh and John at the Center of Cultural Vibrancy for all they’ve done to champion the Saami’s work in the US to preserve and extend their 800 year old traditions of qawwali and khayal. Thanks to Rauf Saami for the kind invitation.

Nick Hallett avant garde noise and Earl Dax populist DJ sets and so many nice reunions. Too few photo documented. Plus the backyard of my Evill apartment for 10 years.
At globalFEST, we recognize that touring is an expensive, yet necessary investment for artists in order to reach new audiences, explore new locations, and maintain a viable career.
That’s why we’re excited to open up applications for our globalFEST Touring Fund, which makes grants directly available to past globalFEST artists by offsetting budget restrictions, thanks to generous support from The Mellon Foundation.
Who can apply:
🎸 Artists who have appeared at globalFEST’s NYC flagship January festival/showcase (2004-2026)
🥁 Artists who have appeared at a NYC gF summer festival (including 2026)
🎻 Note: Non-US citizens must have valid O or P visas in order to apply
Visit globalfest.org/apply/touring-fund for details and to apply!
*** Deadline to apply is June 5, 2026 (11pm EDT) for tours happening in the US between July 1, 2026-January 31, 2027
NYC - wanna make sure you see me during a fleeting visit?
C’mon to Parkside Lounge between 7-10pm tonight. Free admission. @yourhandydandy Earl Dax and @nick_hallett are going to be DJing. I’ll be regaling people by the bar. And maybe they will get us all dancing.
Chicha and psychedelic Cumbia were the order of the day along a range of Afro-Peruvian rhythms at ZeyZey for Novalima with local opener Sonora Tukukuy. It was nice to see Novalima for the first time since they played globalFEST at Webster Hall in 2011. Thanks to Alison of AliaProd for the invitation, and Laura Quinlan for join me in my first visit to Miami’s Little Haiti
