Few debut albums arrive as fully realized as Henry J. Star’s ‘The Soft Apocalypse.’ The project from Nashville-based artist Devin Badgett transforms the weight of modern life into something transcendent, culminating in a sound that feels both classic and futuristic at the same time. Across its ten tracks, Badgett weaves ambient, electronic and emo influences into a cohesive sound, while drawing lyrical and sonic inspiration from unexpected places: video games, a bat encounter and Southern literature. The record confronts both the personal and literal end of the world, weaving together moments of death, love, violence and rebirth into a cathartic and apocalyptic body of work. On ‘The Soft Apocalypse,’ what began as a personal reckoning became a sweeping meditation on hope, identity and transformation in the face of collapse.

For WNXP’s November Nashville Artist of the Month Henry J. Star, building worlds through sound is second nature. His debut album ‘The Soft Apocalypse’ blurs the line between fantasy and self-reflection, using textured, vivid storytelling to process personal and global collapse. That same curiosity and emotional depth run through the playlist he made for us — a collection of songs that span experimental pop, rap and ambient sounds from artists who challenge convention much like he does. Listen at the link in our bio, and keep an eye out for more from @henryjstar this month!

Henry J. Star’s debut album ‘The Soft Apocalypse’ — a sprawling concept record born from years of reckoning with personal and global collapse — is out today on @acrophaserecords . Written from the perspective of a fictional hero who mirrors his own search for meaning, the project from Nashville-based Devin Badgett imagines the end of the world not as destruction, but transformation: “I wanted to write a story where the world did end,” he says, “but it was okay that it did.”
Hear him talk about the making of and meaning behind the LP on this week’s New Music Experience. Listen on-air and online today and tomorrow at 3 PM CT, supported by our friends at @imogeneandwillie .
