HIDETAKA SUZUKI: Breathing
This is Suzuki’s second solo exhibition at Ackerman Clarke. The image above depicts blancmange, a molded dessert, structured with gelatin to a wobbly firmness. It is among several other soft food compositions where the artist investigates translucency and texture by selecting subjects made from thickened liquid.

HIDETAKA SUZUKI: Breathing
Tokyo-based painter and computer programmer, Hidetaka Suzuki, returns to Chicago after a US solo debut at Ackerman Clarke in 2023. Nine wet-on-wet oils in varying modes of representation amplify the simultaneous beauty and discomfort of subjects found in life and online.

“Our bodies are not something we can truly control. They belong to the realm of nature, and perhaps the very idea that we own them is nothing more than a simple assumption. If this is true, then how can we justify calling our emotions, sensations, memories, and perceptions our own? Even though something is certainly moving within the body, it can never be seen directly. This invisibility feels much like a ghost.
We understand most of our physical selves through images, such as fragments of memory, photographs, or pictures on a screen. Although these are distinct from our actual experiences, they eventually take on the same sense of reality and begin to shape us. If the body is not a firm and solid center but it is instead built from layers of images, then what we call reality must also rest on an unstable foundation.”

Bremen painter Vincent Haynes sent new work for NADA Miami 2025. The characters in his paintings are chosen from Haynes’s personal archive of images and videos promoted by governments worldwide. Haynes selects for standout garments, colors, postures, and backdrops that inform his oil paintings interrogating the celebrations and semiotics of power.

The Miami fair hosted by the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is open today until 6pm EST. Special thanks to everyone who has already visited this year’s iteration. Chicago-based Chris Bradley contributes new sculptures to the stand that suggest trade or craft activities where multitudes of toothpicks adhere to one another atop paint cans. Like much of Bradley’s work that suspends disbelief and incorporates extensive finishing techniques to provide verisimilitude, the combined painted objects switch materials, substituting metal alloy for wood and vice versa.

The NADA Miami art fair moves into the weekend. Chicago-based artist, Caleb Schroder, made new work for the booth presentation since the solo exhibition last November. Growing up in rural Montana, Schroder’s contribution to the stand utilizes expanded painting models to probe gender suppositions associated with woven garments of the American Cowboy that, like the wraith-like forms, continue to haunt masculinity.
