‘Sometimes a random moment occurs, and then you realize that it came with a small halo.’
In the scorching New York heat, a hundred people wait to be selected as jurors. Paul is reading a newspaper. Catherine is reading a novel. So begins a whirlwind flirtation: over cappuccinos in Manhattan and gallery trips to Chelsea, Paul and Catherine escape into the illusion of an Italian getaway. Their feelings quickly evolve into something deeper, something – as mature adults with lives of their own – Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret, with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question.
But as the sultry summer week draws to a close, the end of their rendezvous comes into focus, and Paul and Catherine are forced to decide whether to act on their feelings or leave the fantasy of what could have been to the annals of the past.

If the sustained obsession with @heatedrivalrycrave is any sign, 2026 is the year of male yearning—specifically queer male yearning.
Smutty, shirtless men are all over our screens and our bookshelves. It’s been a long time coming. In 2023, Circana BookScan, which tracks book sales across the country, found that LGBT fiction purchases were at an all-time high, over 6.1 million books moved within the year, and there was a 173 percent surge since pre-pandemic levels. Whether they’re facing off on the ice or clinging to each other on motorcycles, the pattern is clear: We can’t get enough stories about wanting—especially when that wanting is delayed, misread, and, well, sexy.
With MLM romance taking over, it feels appropriate to turn to the writers who paved the way—and to André Aciman, whose work has long defined the modern queer romance canon. The author of ‘Call Me by Your Name’ and last year’s ‘Room on the Sea’ understands hesitation and desire—and their power—both personally and in literature. Who better to get queer love story book recommendations from than Aciman himself? The writer and professor of comparative literature at CUNY’s graduate center shares the classic novels he keeps coming back to, his favorite teacher/student romance, and why ‘Wuthering Heights’ will always be famous.

‘Maybe we love people because they won’t let us know them.’
A summer’s evening in Manhattan. Nothing – not cold drinks, not showers, not a stroll through the chilly aisles of an all-night drugstore – can undo the heat’s hold on the city. Julian is half watching the evening news, his husband filling the dishwasher. That’s when it arrives. An email with the subject line: ‘From Paul Axel’. An email about a dead man from Carol – a woman Julian has never met. Paul has left a message he’d like her to relay.
Emails are exchanged. Morning coffee at the Bryant Park Grill is agreed. Carol, fulfilling Paul’s final request, wonders how she will tell Julian of a life – and a love – he has no idea existed. A life, encased in a flash drive, containing multitudes.
Stowaways by André Aciman is a contemporary twist on Brief Encounter and a tender meditation on what might have been, out now in hardback, ebook and audiobook 💚

@acimanandre has written about longing, identity, and belonging—but in real life, those questions are even more personal.
The bestselling author of “Call Me By Your Name” and CUNY professor joined us on Book It to talk about growing up between cultures, feeling unanchored, and the memories behind his memoir “Roman Year”.
