WHITE COLLAR WUXIA 📝 from choreographer @achinesedancer … One of my passions is to shine a light on forgotten heroes of Chinese American history through Chinese dance choreography. “White Collar Wuxia” is inspired by the late Chinese American lawyer Liza Cheuk May Chan - perhaps best known as the Vincent Chin lawyer. In 1983 - just 2 years out of law school - Chan was initially the only attorney who took on the infamous Vincent Chin case in which 2 white killers brutally murdered a Chinese American man with a baseball bat and got off with no jail time. The case became the first federal civil rights trial for an Asian American. Sadly, it was lost on appeal. Chan had always dreamed of becoming a wuxia 武侠 (martial arts hero). Though she lacked the physical stamina for rigorous sports, she finally felt like a warrior when she fought for justice for Vincent Chin. I first learned of Chan in 2022 from the book “From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry: The Killing of Vincent Chin and the Trial that Galvanized the Asian American Movement” by @paulayoo . This led me to Chan’s deeply moving memoir “My Impossible Life.” At first I thought losing a landmark high profile case would be the “impossible” part. But then I learned that Chan became a paraplegic later in life, fighting every minute through searing physical pain while continuing to care for herself, her family, and her community as a self-proclaimed “peaceful warrior.” That Chan wrote and published a memoir under these circumstances (in contrast to someone like me who struggles to post 0.02 sentences 😅) has enabled me and others to learn from and draw strength from this incredible human. There have been many instances in which I’ve poured my heart into something only to just fall short. I also know that throughout history, it’s been “two steps forward, one step back” - that often it takes generations to make monumental change (which still falls short of true justice and equity). Liza Chan has inspired me to keep going - that you can still move forward when you can no longer walk, and you can lay the groundwork for the next generation before you take your last breath. Happy New Year! ❤️ (continued in comments)

March 16, 2021 marks a day filled with violence and grief. In the hours, days, and years that followed, however, the surrounding Atlanta community responded with urgency and care. That response was filled with strength, love, and solidarity. Our community panel will explore the grassroots organizing that emerged in the aftermath of March 16th, the broader historical implication on the Asian American community, and how we move forward together as we continue to heal and reflect. Panelists ◻️ Kerry Lee, Co-Artistic Director of @AtlantaChineseDance ◻️ Scott Kurashige, President of Grace Lee Boggs Foundation ◻️ Stephanie Cho, Director of Demo Labs South & Former Executive Director of @Advancing_Justice_ATL 🎤 Moderated by Sarah Park, City Council Member and first immigrant woman elected to Duluth City Council Please Note: This panel takes place immediately after Chinatown Memories performance by @AtlantaChineseDance . The panel will be free, but the performance is a paid ticketed event. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster. 📍Gas South Theater (6400 Sugarloaf Pkway, Duluth GA) 🗓️ Sunday, March 15 ⏰ 4:30-6:00PM 🔗 RSVP in bio

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY (a day late)! Atlanta Chinese Dance Company’s upcoming production CHINATOWN MEMORIES culminates in the premiere of a mini dance drama honoring American suffragists who marched in support women’s voting rights. The piece shines a spotlight on the remarkable and often overlooked Chinese immigrant Mabel Ping-Hua Lee. At just 15 years old, she rode on horseback alongside American suffragists, helping lead more than 10,000 participants through the streets of Manhattan. Mabel immigrated to the US with her parents in 1905 during the Chinese Exclusion Act era - the first major U.S. policy to explicitly restrict immigration based on race. Despite facing widespread anti-Chinese racism, she partnered with people of different backgrounds to champion women’s rights in her adopted home. “Votes for Women” features original choreography by ACDC Co-Artistic Director Kerry Lee in collaboration with guest artists Lilia Cardosi and Cailan Orn and ACDC dancers. • Join us for the show this weekend! Saturday, 3/14 at 7:30pm Sunday, 3/15 at 2pm Gas South Theater 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway Duluth, GA 30097 • Reserved Seating: $25 Adults $21 Students and Seniors (65+) 🎟️ Ticket Link in Bio • #chinesedance #votesforwomen #internationalwomensday #atlantaevents #atlantadance
