This piece came from the desire to talk to my mom & tell her about my semester.
Today makes two years without you (physically). I’m grateful that they’ve been filled with love, community, & growth. If you’d like to see the piece in person check out The Show on Love @puresoulff :)
What started off as an announcement for a mural-call in our African American Art History course, turned into something much more grand than we could’ve imagined.
In 1956, Ms. JoAnne Smart & Ms. Bettye Tillman were the FIRST Black women to integrate the Woman’s College of North Carolina (now UNCG). To meet her was an honor, & I’m so grateful to see yet another example of how art connects, inspires, & creates space for so many.
Myself, Myles (@mwilderart ), & Lani (@5thyrsnr ) started off as strangers in class, & somehow got together to apply to create a mural for the College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Office. Little did we know the mark we’d be leaving at the time & that one of the trailblazing women we depicted, Ms. JoAnne Smart-Drane, would see it.
The best part of this project next to meeting Ms. JoAnne was definitely working with my friends. If you told me at the beginning of the semester that I’d become besties with the guys in the row behind me I still wouldn’t have anticipated this. Grateful for my team, grateful for our village (shout out to our Dean’s office family ❤️🫶🏽!!)

my intention with this event and my overall show (Black Passing Swamped) is to call out trespassing signs as extensions of white supremacy and capitaism in society. art has helped me recognize this and now i want to create fun, non traditional ways for people (especially of Afrikan descent) to experience art in galleries 🧞
