In 1992, Salt n Pepa reworked their iconic song ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ into a new version entitled ‘Let’s Talk About AIDS’ showing incredible love and support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Those songs were so powerful and groundbreaking in how they playfully used music to invite people to open up and discuss complex subjects like safe sex and AIDS/HIV which had many stigmas. When Karin (Fever Ray) sang ‘Let’s talk about gender, baby’ on The Knife’s brilliant song ‘Full of Fire’ back in 2013, it opened up another big and complex subject that created a huge personal awakening in me. Karin and Olof invited me to make a remix of ‘Full of Fire’ and then I produced a rework for my 2014 album ‘All Love’s Legal.’ I wanted to talk about gender so much back then and was only just beginning to understand how being assigned a gender at birth had separated me from who I really was and left me lost for decades. Through this song, I started to learn that maybe one day I could be free from Gender or at least live with it on my terms. Now with this brilliant new version of ‘Let’s Talk about Gender baby’ with ABSOLUTE. and BIMINI out today, there are more important subjects to talk about courtesy of the latter’s passionate spoken word verse. Homelessness, a free Palestine, trans rights, abortion rights, illegal wars, open borders and more. It’s a beautiful and powerful song so let’s get talking baby!
