Thereâs a gap on Wilfâs bookshelf thatâs been there for a while. Heâs cleared a space for a terrarium to house his (hypothetical, dream) pet; a gecko. AD
đŚThis isnât going to happen any time soon but I do admire his persistence. Heâs loved lizards for as long as I can remember (in Reception, he and his friend used to pretend to be lizards at breaktime!) and I hope this book has filled a bit of the gecko-shaped hole in his life.
đ˘Matt Sewellâs âWorld ofâŚâ series has become synonymous with exquisite watercolour illustrations on white space, giving them a striking quality, and just the right amount of information, suffused with humour and a tone that makes it highly engaging.
đLearn about the âold dearâ that is the GalĂĄpagos tortoise, the âbeefy headed⌠snappy dresserâ, the Gila monster, and the âswaggering sidestepâ of the sidewinder. Itâs easy to become swiftly engrossed in this one, learning more about recognisable reptiles, and discovering others for the first time. In my case, thatâs everything from the Mexican mole lizard, the blue-tongued skink and the teeny, tiny speckled padloper tortoise.
đŚThis one is definitely in the âif kids had coffee tablesâ category and feels like a highly giftable keepsake for any reptile-loving child (or adult!).
đ˘ The Colourful World of Reptiles by Matt Sewell is available now.
There are two must-see exhibitions on at the V&A this month - and we've got the books to match!
Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art
(Showing now, closes 8th Nov)
The UKâs first exhibition on Elsa Schiaparelli spans the 1920s to today, celebrating the innovative designer's influence. It traces the fashion houseâs groundbreaking origins and its evolution under current creative director Daniel Roseberry.
Elsa Schiaparelli sent shockwaves through the fashion establishment with her witty, ingenious and artful designs. Lauded by CristĂłbal Balenciaga as the âonly real artist in coutureâ she infused her collections with Surrealism, and collaborated on pieces with contemporaries from the art world, including Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, Salvador DalĂ and Alberto Giacometti. This lavishly illustrated book explores the origins and legacy of one of fashionâs greatest innovators.
The Music is Black: A British Story
(Showing now, closes 3rd Jan)
The inaugural exhibition at V&A East, exploring 125 years of Black music-making in Britain. This landmark exhibition will reveal how Black British music has shaped British culture.
Black British music has been the soundtrack to periods of profound political, social, cultural and demographic change. Epic in scope and personal recollection, The Music is Black bears witness to the resilience, ingenuity and heart of all those who create. Each genre is then considered with an academic framing of its social and political landscape and artist interviews that include, Carroll Thompson, Neville Staple, Kenny Wellington, Bluey Maunick, Fabio and Grooverider, Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey of Morcheeba, Megaman, DJ Target and Slimzee.

Maybe itâs the fairytale vibe, maybe itâs the gentle exploration of fear, maybe itâs the captivating illustrations. Either way, Shrinking Violet has really captured Irisâs imagination. AD
đŞťIn her castle on the coast, surrounded by forest, Violet keeps everything just so, whilst Bird sings in the skies, keeping an eye on her. It seems idyllic but, sometimes, Violet becomes frightened and, when that happens, she shrinks.
đŞťThinking soothing thoughts helps, and Birdâs arrival each morning is balm. So, when Bird doesnât appear one day, Violet panics. As she tries to find him, sheâs soon smaller than the blades of grass, fear fuelling the shrinking. Will she be able to stay safe? Can she reach Bird in time to save him?
đŞťRich, descriptive language abounds, alongside spellbinding, sometimes surreal illustrations filled with clever use of perspective and colour to represent Violetâs state of mind - and size. The overall effect is a beguiling story of the power of friendship, self-belief and inner strength but also a clever visual depiction of how small and inconsequential fear can make us feel.
Available now.
