Did you know New Mexico has a state fossil? It's called the Coelophysis. It was a small dinosaur compared to the large skeletons you might see featured at the natural history museum - only about 9 feet long and weighing about 50 lbs. It was found in Rio Arriba County in 1881. Then, in 1947, archaeologists discovered a large graveyard of Coelophysis in a quarry near the original excavation site. Coelophysis was named New Mexico's State Fossil in 1981. Learn more about Coelophysis and other prehistoric creatures at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (@newmexicodinomuseum )
