Although images and sounds can document a location, the sense of a place is more often shaped by how it is remembered, forgotten, or conceived in the mind. A place can be tinged with melancholic nostalgia or continuously rediscovered, existing between recollection and loss. They constantly form new, interstitial links to our other sensations and narratives about where we were and where we wished we could have been.

After retiring from a life of rice farming in a small village in Chiang Mai province, Thailand, Lung Neaw returns to his homeland, far removed from the political turmoil of Bangkok. Through Rirkrit Tiravanija’s lens, we follow Neaw as he moves through forests and open fields. His interactions with the local sage, the elephant king, and his fellow villagers foster an open space for dialogue, free from bias and judgement.

You Inhuman Thing
As part of the Art Satellite Project Xu Bing initiated in 2024, the moving image, which will debut at AAGFF 2026, combines satellite imagery, found footage, a voice-over narrative, and AI-generated video clips based on social media buzzwords to highlight the unstable entanglement between the human and the technologically powered nonhuman.

In “AAGFF 2026: The Curatorial Framework of ‘Space Enter Shift’,” curator Silke Schmickl and the AAGFF Festival Team unpack the ideas behind this year’s edition. Inspired by three keys on a keyboard — space, enter, and shift — the essay traces how the festival explores space as both a formal element of artmaking and a way of structuring the world, from the intimacy of a bedroom to the vastness of the universe, from territorial boundaries to virtual realities.
