De Zeedijk (Chinatown)
One Year ago I worked at NV Zeedijk, a social real estate company that from its creation in 1985 has been working effortlessly to maintain and reclaim the Zeedijk. At first the goal was to get rid of the plentiful heroin ‘’cafes’’ full of street dealers who had worsened living conditions so much that the place was referred to ‘’as a no go area’’ (some signs of these times are still visible today with metal gates that are closed daily after 18:00.) The restructuring and rebuilding done at that time is in my opinion a perfect example of Gentrification for the people and not against the people. Using real estate as a tool for neighborhood improvement and not solely profit, (Amsterdam anno 2023 take notes pls). Nowadays NV Zeedijk focuses on keeping affordable housing for people with a connection to the Zeedijk / Red Light district area but also a unique shop palette that doesn't fall in line with the monoculture mainly focussed on the mass-tourist seen elsewhere in the city center.
In the early 80’s, Local residents regularly approached the municipality asking if anything could be done about the impoverished Zeedijk. However, the municipality did not respond to this. Amsterdammer Jack Cohen came up with a plan to save the street from impending doom. In 1985 he founded NV Zeedijk, together with the community center and the Amsterdam City business association. The municipality of Amsterdam later also joined the project. The rescue plan: get a grip on the Zeedijk by buying and managing as many buildings as possible. NV Zeedijk attracted investors and managed to raise money from a number of banks. One building after another was bought, renovated if necessary and then rented out and managed. Jack Cohen became a figurehead and later director of NV Zeedijk. Janny Alberts succeeded him as director in 2007.
Throughout my year at NV Zeedijk i found a few books that feel like they capture the essence of what life was like on the Zeedijk in the 80’s: Zeedijk,de 'dijk' binnenstebuiten,
H. Brouns. Bureau Warmoesstraat, Cees Koring. Bet van Beeren koningin van de Zeedijk, Tibbe Bosch.
