DANDYISM : THE AFRICAN DANDY
The @voguemagazine 2025 met gala explores black Dandyism which is a powerful tribute to the elegance, self expression and resilience of black men in fashion and society in general.
Black or African Dandyism is more than just a fashion statement, it’s a form of self expression, cultural pride and resistance against oppression. It helps the people express themselves in a powerful and meaningful way in order to challenge societal and political norms.
For example the sapeurs of the Congo of which this project is heavily inspired by, are a group of people known for their flamboyant and elegant style. This movement emerged the 1920s as a form of resistance and self expression, during the French and Belgian colonial rule and the movement emphasized on non violence, respect and chivalry.
The sapeurs have continued till today in which they have gained worldwide recognition, with their influence being evident in fashion campaigns and documentaries of today.
