It’s a small drop in the ocean but I wanted to use this platform to pay tribute to the incredible advocacy of @gretathunberg and the millions of people around the globe marching again today. It’s no exaggeration to say that climate change represents one of the greatest existential threats to life on this miraculous, precious planet and that action needs to be taken now. If you want to find out how you can take action in your own life there are fantastic resources at @friends_earth and @nrdc_org providing practical advice for lowing your carbon footprint and tools to apply pressure to law makers.

A speeding train or a sublime Rothko? And as a disclaimer I don’t say that to be flippant aha - abstract expressionism is probably my single favourite visual art form! More as a reminder that we’re surrounded by beauty and intrigue if we are able to find the time to look. Awesome reference and inspiration from the great photography of @gbosshardt .

I had the urge to paint this floral arrangement having recently started to learn more about the life and works of Georgia O’Keeffe. Its the first time I’ve painted flowers since I was really young and it’s fun to see this next to the simple watercolours I used to paint when I was 7 or 8. Beautiful floral arrangement from @rafagdsr , one of my absolute favourite photographers on insta!

Enjoying a few days away with family and whilst sat looking down at my flamingo adorned shorts, I I felt a strong urge to paint something other than a human face for the first time in a while. I definitely enjoyed the change so expect some more wildlife creeping into the feed! References from the quite mesmerising wildlife photography of @loeildeos !

Felt inspired to try and paint some translucent fabrics after seeing @caseybaugh masterpieces ‘Wrapped’ and ‘Displacement’. Definitely an exercise in patience! Working from an awesome fashion editorial of @jo.gfl taken by the talented @patrickglocker .

A painting of @elizamarasco this week. Working the green and blue into the eyes brought this whole piece alive. It’s funny how a few strokes or a particular choice of colour can have this transformative effect on a piece. References for the fantastic portraiture of @unascritturadiluce .

Another piece exploring the coming together of complexity and simplicity. In the early stages of this piece I spent some time trying to capture the essence of the composition, expression and gesture with just a line or two. Then, at the end, I’ve tried to work these sketches into the piece in a harmonious way. I’m hoping that this way I can begin to capture both the spontaneity of the thought and the fully articulated idea simultaneously. Working from an amazing shot of @victoriaperusheva by the great @alessioalbi .

Seeking high contrast in both light and form in the third of this series. Wonderful references of @vitagoncharuk from @micmojo .

A continuation on a theme. Introducing these line elements definitely creates an opportunity to crop in for some cool abstract compositions as well. Working from a portrait of @beelzegirl taken by the ever so talented @paeulini . Thanks for the constant inspiration!

An art style I’ve become fascinated with over the past few weeks has been the line art of artists like @peytil . When I studied art at school my teacher would get the class to try drawing figures with a single line, not allowing our pen or pencil to leave the page until complete. There’s something about the essentialism of this approach, trying to capture the essence of something as efficiently as possible, that contrasts so starkly with the realism I tend to engage in. Finding ways of bringing this abstraction to how I paint really intrigues me - definitely something I’m keen to explore further. Wonderful reference image of @kudry_mari by @igorpavlovv .

Back to the high contrast portraiture with a painting of @paeulini . Putting in the final highlights and seeing the piece come together is definitely a very satisfying part of the process, especially when your working with a large value range. References from an incredible @paeulini self portrait.
