When I was 19, I first went to the Rocksteady Lounge and heard @bossharmz play a Skatalites tune called “Addis Ababa,” and it immediately captivated me. I remember asking @calamity.vx about it; he introduced me to a unique sound I had never experienced—a heavy, “evil” sounding brass section where the trombone led the melody over a militant snare drum beat. That sound became an obsession.
After research, I learned more about The Skatalites, and specifically the story of the man behind the trombone, Don Drummond. His compositions needed no lyrics to captivate you or express what was going on in his life. Known by many jazz musicians in the 50s as the best trombone player in the world, he was a genius.
This track is “Smiling” by Don Drummond and The Skatalites—a true gem and a piece of history. The connection between Lloyd Knibb’s burru beat and Don D’s masterful trombone transcends into a superb and divine melody. If you are having a tough day, play this song loud; I guarantee you will be “Smiling.”
