A very special thank you to everyone at the GBB, especially Lisa, Joel, johanna, & Jan, for making it all—this exhibition, but also the whole two years—possible.
The entangled root system below us is calling to remember the reciprocal nature of life on Earth. Five artists arrived on the full moon to Ubiškės3 for a month to practice conviviality in the ongoing harvest season. Everyday, the mornings start earlier as the residents sync with the rhythm of the land.
Collectively, they dreamed up a being, rooted to the land that’s here, filled with memories, its heart bleeding beetroot red. Feeding the local mosquito population is part of walking through the forest to gather mushrooms. We thank the chanterelle risotto for dinner, flavoured with kernels of sand between our teeth. Each day, the swim in the lake goes further as we befriend the underwater web of plants. Gathering the rotten apples underneath the tree of life we gift them to the deers and wild hogs. Where no one is a mother, care becomes all encompassing.

Meet our resident! 🐜
Steph Joyce is an art worker with a practice bound to study, poetics, and the friends made along the way. They often work with text, textiles and sensory film, and play with nonlinear narrative structures to engage with concealed or hidden relations of the everyday. With Catwings, a collaborative initiative in Berlin, they research self-organization, non- hierarchal co-learning, gathering-based practices, and collective action.
At Ubiškės 3, Steph will work on a text/space-based project which employs queer forms to express the tangible and ephemeral while considering the politics of loneliness and desire unfulfilled in relation to generational familial care work and alternative care structures. As an entry point into the process, they’ll host collective reading and walking sessions with anyone interested.
Project is funded by the Telšiai municipality.
