Iâd only peripherally heard of Outlander, but after being asked to shoot the main leads earlier this year I went on a deep dive and realised how huge and beloved the show is. In preparation for the shoot I even started watching it, and although historical fantasy romance isnât normally my bag I was bewitched by Sam Heughan and the mesmeric Caitriona Balfe. After 11 years and 8 seasons the finale airs this week, and the press interest has been huge.

I photographed Caitriona and Sam at the end of a long press junket day - by the time they came to me they had already done a staggering 8 shoots at the Soho Hotel. Over the years Iâve done a number of shoots during press days there, and I always feel slightly intimidated when I turn up with a single assistant and a car full of kit to find other photographers coming out with a huge crew and a lorry load of equipment. The first time this happened was over 10 years ago when I was photographing the director Mira Nair (and none other than the mother of Zohran Mamdani) for the FT. Upon arrival my heart sank as I saw
@nadavkander loading out - for a young and relatively inexperienced photographer this felt like an insurmountable talent to follow.

This time I was ushered in to a two bedroom suite, the larger of which was hosting a Vogue shoot with all the crew and kit one might imagine. I had a paper backdrop, 3 Profoto heads plus the talents of
@ritikashaivaphotography on assist, and only 30 minutes to shoot portraits of Caitriona and Sam together and separately. But my goodness they were PROS đŞ - not the merest hint of any tiredness after a gruelling day of press. They were also just unfailingly polite and professional (and gorgeous) and so well deserving of their legions of die-hard fans. Thanks as ever to
@thelatimes and
@chapin73 for brilliant shoots that also keep me on my toes! Also what a treat to see
@gracegilfeather who was styling
@samheughan đ¤
