Broken Frames Syndicate continues its exploration of the climate crisis through contemporary music and powerful texts. The latest edition focuses on listening to the voices of Indigenous communities who are directly affected by the realities of climate change.
At the heart of the program lies a statement from the collective @futurosindigenas :
“Futuros Indígenas is a network of narrative resistance. In times of climate crisis, we sow stories and actions in defense of our territories — our bodies — our spirits.”
I am looking forward to play a beautiful solo piece by Helen Fisher, a composer from New Zealand - Te tangi a te matui (The call of the matui)

Der Brand - Werkschau (UA)
Die Autorin Sina Ahlers und die Komponistin Julia Mihály arbeiten gemeinsam unter dem Titel „Der Brand“ an einem Musiktheater für das Staatstheater Kassel, das sich mit Asylpolitik, Europäischen Außengrenzen und der Situation in Geflüchtetenlagern auseinandersetzt. Im Rahmen ihrer Recherche trafen die beiden Künstlerinnen an der Carl Schomburg Gesamtschule in Kassel Schüler:innen der 8. und 9. Klasse. In mehreren Workshops entstanden Texte über Un-/Zugerhörigkeit, Menschenrechte und Flucht. Im Rahmen einer Ortsbegehung des Geländes der Jägerkaserne in Kassel haben die Schüler:innen Field Recordings aufgenommen. Dort steht seit kurzem die Interimsspielstätte des Staatstheater Kassel. Ein Denkmal erinnert dort an das ehemalige Theater des Displaced Persons Camps. Auf dieser Grundlage sind gemeinsam mit Mitgliedern des Broken Frames Syndicate musikalische Texturen und Klangtransformationen entstanden, die in einer Gesamtkomposition aus Text, Klang und Video als Werkschau präsentiert werden. Das Projekt findet im Rahmen des Ottilie-Roederstein-Stipendiums statt, welches Julia Mihály und Sina Ahlers 2025 gemeinsam erhalten haben.

Within asambura, the bass flute extends the ensemble’s lower register and opens a space of resonance that is both aesthetic and symbolic.
Its sound is characterized by a reduced overtone spectrum — dark, breath-driven, and inherently unstable — which allows for subtle transitions between tone, noise, and air.
Through extended techniques and flexible fluctuations in singing and multiphonic effects, the instrument explores territories usually associated with other timbral traditions.
In particular, it references and abstracts sonorities of Middle Eastern aerophones, muezzin associations and percussion instruments:
imitations of frame drum, dharbuka and riq-like articulations through percussive air sounds and key clicking open up to a high overtone range, and additionally transformations of ney-like inflections into an altered, non-referential context.
The result is not imitation, but abstraction of gesture — a re-contextualization of sound materials detached from their original ritual or cultural function.
In this way, the bass flute becomes a mediator within the asambura sound:
connecting breath and membrane, tone and resonance, reference and aestetic transformation —
a fundamental element of the asambura signature sound.
