Emerging from Massey University, Ruohan Zhao uses design as resistance. This project challenges the quiet rituals of the fashion system, where rebellion becomes trend and individuality is repackaged for resale. Through sculptural silhouettes and a metaphorical metamorphosis inspired by the caterpillar, the work confronts consumerism, digital validation, and the illusion of choice under capitalism. Anti-Fashion. Under this capitalism society, everyone is commodity and consumer at the same time, you chewing on your own flesh plus GST without even noticing. Because it costs to notice, it’s too confusing to notice and what can you do even if you notice. You catch trend, people call you micro trend final boss. You don’t participate in trend, people call you Normcore. This question can’t be answered with just Yes or No, either way you will be running in circles. When your anger, frustration and consciousness became a marketable trick, do they still hold the meaning? This system flatten any radical ideas and movements make it into the next trend, it eats your soul and spit it out without it then packaged up sell it back to you. Outside of the system is another system, it’s a losing battle. Only way to cheat this mechanism is to know what you don’t like. Anti-Fashion is not anti dressing, it won’t become next trend when it is a tool to anti elite gatekeeping and anti hallucinatory validation seeking. Here is the project that reflects the key ideas of my thesis “A Design Exploration Of The Contemporary Anti-Fashion Paradox  : Taste, Rebellion, and Digital Distortion”. Carrying my thesis is a metaphorical design depicting the metamorphosis of a caterpillar. -Inviting comments-
