Construction is not only about what rises at the end; long before completion, sites shape daily life. Our onsite teams think beyond the structure itself to the community around it. Considerate and proactive neighbor communication, thoughtful visual presentation of sites, clear and safe pedestrian pathways and the active management of noise and dust all make sure impact is minimised, not merely through reactive compliance. These are the quieter decisions that shape community perception long before project handover and ultimately define how a project is remembered within the community. 1. Stokes Rousseau has recently delivered the refurbishment and conversion of a heritage-listed former Female Refractory Ward at Jacksons Hill, Sunbury, into a vibrant new arts and cultural precinct for the community. The heritage building has been transformed into a hub of creative activity, delivering a community art gallery, 100-seat community theatre, potters' workshop and a range of studios and creative workspaces throughout. Internal works encompassed the conservation of the existing heritage fabric and a comprehensive fit-out including custom joinery, timber flooring, and painting and render finishes, alongside new mechanical, electrical and audiovisual systems. A new annexe was constructed to complement the original building, introducing a generous foyer and a flexible communal event space at the heart of the precinct. Its upper façade clad in custom terracotta panels and ceramic tiles produced by the local arts community. Civil and landscaping upgrades completed the project, with new pathways and car parking enhancing accessibility across the site. Working sensitively with heritage advisors throughout, Stokes Rousseau delivered an outcome that honours this building's layered history while opening it up as a connected, creative and inclusive space for the Sunbury community. The winning design for the Coburg Library and Piazza has been revealed. A multidisciplinary team led by NSW-based Durbach Block Jaggers, working in collaboration with Melbourne-based Architecture Associates and landscape architects Openwork has been awarded the $60 million project through a two-stage design competition. Jury Chair, Victorian Government Architect Jill Garner said of the winning design “the jury is delighted by the confident design strategy of this proposal. It is grounded in its urban and community context, achieving a convincing balance of compact urban form, civic presence, solar orientation, and architectural delight. It is a building that is both functional and expressive.” “The generous piazza, framed by seating and greenery, creates a central focus for the library, and establishes a new public place. It is framed by its local context, including churches and other adjacent buildings, ensuring the space feels intentional rather than residual.” On Wurundjeri Country.

New project announcement: Our team’s proposal has been selected as the competition winning design for the new Coburg Library and Piazza project! Design Team: @durbachblockjaggers @architectureassociates @_openwork A library is a place of invitation and acceptance. It offers comfort without commerce. It is aspirational without entry criteria. A library is a repository for memory and learning - alone and shared, quiet for solace and exuberant for connection. The proposed building is small in footprint, tall in stature. Its small footprint and siting guarantee solar access to the new piazza. Its height provides a beacon for the community, visible from afar as a memorable moment in the city. The Piazza will be the new civic heart of Coburg: a generous, sunlit space where flows of water and people converge. It will honour a long history of gathering, abundance, and exchange. A tree-ed colonnade, gentle topography and basalt surfaces create a landscape in and of place. It will sponsor cultural connection, ecological renewal, and a future precinct shaped by community. Competition overseen by @citylabau . Thank you to the competition jury: Government Architect for Victoria, Jill Garner; Director of Sibling Architecture, Qianyi Lim; Associate Professor of Architecture, Monash University, Maryam Gusheh; Director of Jones and Whitehead, and Adjunct Professor of Landscape Architecture at RMIT University, Ron Jones; and Director Community at Merri-bek City Council, Eamonn Fennessy. We our fellow competitors: Studio Bright, Oculus, Board Grove, Blaklash, Five Mile Radius and Barbara Flynn; FJC Studio, TCL and The Indigenuity Lab and Edition Office, Blaklash, Hassell, Finding Infinity and Kate Rhodes.
