‼️BIG NEWS: As COPA is reintroduced in the New York City Council, @nycmayor is once again reaffirming his support for the bill. The Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA) will help stop speculative real estate investors from scooping up affordable housing, displacing tenants, and driving up rents — while giving mission-driven nonprofits and community groups a fair shot to preserve housing affordability and keep working-class New Yorkers in NYC. New York is facing a depeening affordability crisis. We need every tool available to protect our neighborhoods and expand community-controlled housing. PASS COPA NOW!

As state budget negotiations continue, we urge @govkathyhochul @andreastewartcousins and @cheastie to build on their recent success funding community-controlled, deeply-affordable housing through the Community Land Trust Support Program and the Community Controlled Affordable Housing. In this year’s budget, let’s triple that initial investment to equip CLTs statewide with the resources needed to prepare acquisitions, revitalize buildings, and create affordable and accessible community spaces. See our full letter to the Governor & State Legislature in our bio’s linktree.

GROUPS TO NYS: INVEST IN COMMUNITY-CONTROLLED HOUSING Today, 55 community and affordable housing groups sent a letter to top state officials urging increased investment in this year’s budget in community-controlled housing, including community land trusts (CLTs). The CLT Support Program and the Community-Controlled Affordable Housing Fund are the only dedicated state resources supporting the infrastructure of the growing CLT movement, even as demand for deeply and permanently affordable housing continues to expand across New York. Albany must invest in models that address root causes of our deepening affordability crisis. #nysbudget #affordablehousing #clt #nyc

🚌THE COMMUNITY LAND TRUST MOVEMENT GOES TO ALBANY! 🚌 Last week, we and coalition partners in @_nyccli traveled to Albany to educate state electeds about community land trusts (CLTs) and demand action for housing justice. CLTs are community-controlled nonprofit organizations that take land and housing off the speculative market and steward that land for the public good. There are currently over 30 CLTs in New York State, each working to meet urgent community needs, from deeply affordable housing to community and cultural spaces. We urged NY legislators to… ✅Increase funding for CLTs in the FY 2027 budget ✅Pass the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (A6100/S401), a bill creating pathways for tenants to work with community land trusts and other nonprofits to stabilize their homes and expand the supply of permanently affordable housing. CLT funding is included in this year’s Executive, Senate and Assembly One House budgets — and we called on legislators to deepen their commitment to permanent affordability and community control by raising support for CLTs to $7.5 million in the final state budget. Let’s make it happen! 💪💪🏾💪🏼💪🏽

📣We are thrilled to announce the release of “Bringing Land and Housing into Community Hands,” a beautiful fold-out poster showcasing New York City’s growing community land trust (CLT) movement! 🌸Brimming with hand-drawn illustrations of actual CLT organizers and projects from across the five boroughs, the poster explains how CLTs work and how community members can get involved—bringing the model to life and serving as a springboard for organizing. NYCCLI, New Economy Project ( @neweconomyproject ), and South Bronx Unite ( @southbronxunite ) made the poster in collaboration with the Center for Urban Pedagogy ( @welcometocup ) and illustrator and designer Ishita Jain ( @ishitajain24 ). Download a digital copy and read more at our bio’s linktree. Designed for community groups to use in their outreach and organizing, the poster features: ✳️ case studies of six New York City CLTs, with QR codes to learn more and take action ✳️ space for writing and drawing—inviting New Yorkers to envision just futures for their own neighborhoods ✳️ background on CLTs’ historical roots in civil rights activism and Indigenous practices ✳️ accessible information on how CLTs can support a variety of community needs—from permanently-affordable housing to commercial, community, and green spaces Huge thanks to CUP, Ishita, and all the NYCCLI members who came together to develop this exciting new organizing tool! Please download and share, and reach out for more information!

HUGE COALITION WIN: Mayor Mamdani is CANCELING the 2026 tax lien sale. This is a major victory for the Abolish the Lien Sale Coalition, which has organized for years to expose and eradicate this Giuliani-era policy that has disproportionately harmed and extracted wealth from Black and Brown communities. We look forward to working with the administration to implement a land bank and other policies that stabilize tax-distressed properties, keep New Yorkers in place, and protect urgently needed affordable housing.
