FANTASTIC review of Contra Madre by @h_d_angel in @pitchfork today!

My favorite thing to do for my bday is host a rad show so I put this lil gathering together, FRIDAY 4/17, to kick off courtyard season at the Grays Warehouse, just a few days before I leave on tour w MWAA for a whole month.  Stacked bill featuring some of the best and most creative, weird and wonderful music being made in the city in an equally beautiful place we should all feel lucky to have and to enrich. Here's to 100 more courtyard shows. Introducing @p.s.y.c.h.i.c.m.o.n.i.c.a members of @beauty.noise for their first show. A thousand thanks to the @weteggsphl for hosting the night and everyone else performing. Special thanks also @cosmic_haha for their help making the flyer of my dreams come true <3 Fun, magic, refreshments and curiosities will abound. Mysterious special guests to be announced. All proceeds will be donated to Juntos and perhaps one other reputable charity thst directly serves the needs of people whose rights are under attack by the feds in our community. Tonight, Sunday February 15th 8PM at Studio 34 located at 4522 Baltimore Ave (on the 34/T2 trolley line) the final of the "love/hallmark" weekend shows, Nomad War Machine with TJ Borden & Embarker: Contra Madre record release show. tickets and info link in bio. Nomad War Machine is an improvised metal duo consisting of guitarist James Reichard and drummer Julius Masri. In 2023, both musicians entered Baltimore’s Tempo House Recording studio with pedal steel luminary Susan Alcorn Lobato. The release of the album Contra Madre (VG+ Records), on January 31 of 2026, marks the one year anniversary of her passing. The Fire Museum Presents concert serves as a Philadelphia premier of sorts, and a celebration of Susan’s undeniable creative fording into new sonic territories. February 15th, Nomad War Machine will be joined by Brooklyn based cellist TJ Borden, a restless improviser and explorer of tonal possibilities. TJ has performed and recorded with the Mivos Quartet, and has released many of his own works, both solo and collaborative. Embarker is the solo project of audio visual artist Michael Roy Barker. Mb uses a variety of electronics, modular synthesizer, homemade instruments, voice and processed audio collages to create hyperkinetic, genre-bending music that is often used as a soundtrack to found videos or as an interactive audio visual experience. TUESDAY NIGHT at the Red Room, the @highzerofoundation hosts the Baltimore album-release show for Contra Madre, a galvanic collaboration between Philadelphia duo @_nomad.war.machine (@james.reichard.music on guitar and @zooolius on drums) and the late pedal-steel guitarist Susan Alcorn. No one can take Susan’s place, but violist @mylesofdestruction will be sitting in with NWM for this show. Plus a special opening set by the Cups, a collusion of Baltimore avant titans @donwingdowning , Hanna Olivegren, and @internet.greg ! That’s Feb. 10 at the Red Room at @normals_books_records , 425 E. 31st St, 8 pm, $10-$20 sliding scale (cash, if you please).

Today is the first anniversary of the passing of Susan Alcorn. Today is also the unofficial/spiritual release date of Contra Madre, her last completed recording, this one a collaboration with @_nomad.war.machine . Much love and gratitude to Susan, @blazingshutters55 , @james.reichard.music , @zooolius , @craigwbowen , @brandon_geurts , @chadpelton , and everyone else who helped make it happen.
