âNo Man is an Islandâ
(1624) John Donne
No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.
This poem was written in the 17th century and is as relevant today as it gets. For her series "No Man is an Island," Nancy Jesse has traveled to a small island in the west of Scotland to explore questions of separation and belonging, the fascination for islands and the issues they raise in a world whose crises leave no one untouched.

Milica, Serbia
âWhen I heard about the experiences of other mothers with immigrant backgrounds, I realized that this was exactly what my parents and I had been missing back then. Thatâs when I knew: I want to work as a âStadtteilmutterâ. Many parents donât feel comfortable asking questions or bringing up issues at school, so they just let things slide.
Thatâs exactly where I want to step in and help.â
Milicaâs portrait is part of the project Iâm working on in cooperation with @bbt_bundeselternnetzwerk . For this project we interviewed and portrayed people that came to Germany from third countries that are or were involved in the German education system. Through the interviews and the portraits we want to give them a voice hearing their stories, the good and the bad things they experienced during their time navigating the German education system.
Exhibition opening: 7th May, 6 pm, Hansabibliothek, Berlin â¨
Setara, Afghanistan
âMy female friends in Afghanistan arenât allowed to go to school; theyâre at home. When I talk to them, they say theyâre just waiting. (âŚ) Then I tell myself: Thank goodness Iâm here; I have to study.â
