Regen Projects
Custom Lightweight Travel Trays
In October 2024 we completed a fabrication project for Regen Projects when they came to us needing a travel-ready support system for a suite of monumental Walead Beshty works—some measuring up to 121” × 134”. The challenge was clear: build something strong, rigid, and protective… without the weight and cost of traditional crating.
Working in collaboration with @mm_surface_craft , MountArt accomplished a design and build of six custom box-style shallow trays with integrated handles, engineered specifically for Beshty’s work. These compositions required secure tie-in points while remaining lightweight enough for efficient studio handling and transport.
The Build
-Premcore plywood framing, lightweight material ripped into 3½” structural members
-Triple-wall cardboard backing for rigidity without excess weight
-Interior perimeter rails to secure the grommeted works directly into the trays
-Integrated handles for safe maneuvering at scale
-Studio-to-gallery workflow: trays delivered to Beshty Studio for loading, then transported with artworks to Regen
-Fabrication window: just over one week.
The result was a modular, cost-conscious system that protected oversized works in transit while remaining light enough for a small crew to handle safely — a streamlined alternative to traditional crating.
This is the kind of problem-solving we specialize in: exhibition-scale fabrication that balances structure, weight, logistics, and budget without overbuilding.
Shoutout to MM Surface Craft on the collab - — and to the rockstar Regen art handling crew we worked alongside during transport and installation. Smooth moves at this scale don’t happen without a stellar team on the floor.
