We met bright and early at 9 AM on a sunny Thursday morning at the new home for @mess_ltd (Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio) in Federation Square. Robin Fox (@foxalot ) is its co-founder and artistic director. Robin greeted me cheerfully, and we headed to the educational breakout space to conduct the interview. He expressed his excitement about now having a separate area to hold workshops while members can still access the collection, something that wasn’t possible at the old location due to space restrictions.
Today, MESS acts as a vital incubator for Melbourne’s electronic music community.
So, how does one start a synthesiser library? Writer Crissy Collins (@_mothafunk ) speaks with a man whose reputation precedes him and whose origin story is often unlikely.

Mothafunk is a Chicago born DJ who has called Naarm home for the past six years.
Her sound moves fluidly across drum and bass, footwork, jersey club and global club music, while remaining inseparable from the influence of growing up in the Midwest, a true musical playground.
Taking inspiration from Chicago and Detroit’s deep creative lineage, from disco to house, jack to juke, and techno to electro, alongside her parents’ record collection, she brings a rich and informed perspective to the dancefloor. Her sets balance high energy rhythms with a deep respect for the roots of the culture.
More than just a DJ set, her musical focus is a calling to showcase, preserve and analyse dance music and its origins in Black America, connecting past and present through sound.

A Chicago-born, Naarm-based DJ, event producer and journalist with a decade in the game, Crissy Collins (aka Mothafunk) is on a mission to play good music and carry on Chicago’s party ethos. She believes the dance floor is sacred—a space of ritual, connection, and intention. A true music industry polymath, Mothafunk has thrived as a Triple R radio host, event curator, and journalist, with bylines in MixMag AU/NZ and Vice Australia, plus hosting panels and artist talks.
Her sets are a masterclass in sonic fluidity, weaving rare grooves, global club heat, and hidden classics into electrifying journeys. Crissy has warmed up stages for heavyweights like Ezra Collective, Detroit In Effect, and Seun Kuti, and delivered standout performances at festivals including Meredith, Strawberry Fields, and When Pigs Fly.
