Friday May 22! Join us for an evening of moving and transformative live performances in the PRS Library from Little Mazarn and Meernaa! LITTLE MARZAN Mustang Island, the third album from Austin-based band Little Mazarn, is a gentle force. Waves of grief crest like surf on the Texas coast. Wild horses break through long-shuttered gates, only to come back around. Lead songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Verrill (she/her) joins bandmates Jeff Johnston (he/him) and Carolina Chauffe (they/them). The ten-song collection continues work with Dear Life Records. A full-throated romp through the capabilities of community-minded songcraft, Mustang Island is both naturalistic and futuristic, completely recasting Little Mazarn’s origins in primitive folk. MEERNAA Meernaa is Carly Bond’s beautiful, freaky dream. When you listen to her songs, you have the feeling of being in this dream: walking alone in the woods, sometimes spooked and sometimes elated, and you are uncertain whether or not you will wake up in a familiar place. Bond (guitar and vocals) formed Meernaa with Rob Shelton (keys) in Oakland in 2015. They are natural collaborators (both work as engineers at John Vanderslice’s recording studio Tiny Telephone) who draw influence from the environments of the Bay Area, where the shift between dramatic landscapes can be hard to perceive. My newest album, Moonshiner Springs, was produced by Carly Bond (Meerna @_meernaa_ ), who also plays lead guitar. It features Mat Davidson (Twain, Adrianne Lenker, Natalie Jane Hill @twainband ) on pedal steel, violin, and harmonies. It started when Carly called wanting to visit South Dakota. She showed up with a trunk of recording gear in late summer with good weather. We had so much fun recording at my grandparent’s old house. We drove out to the river to swim. Got sand in the car. All the best stuff. Before this, I’d been sick for a long time. I started posting my songs online before I lost my strength. All sorts of friends and allies encouraged me to do more. Adrianne Lenker invited me to open for her on tour. My gumption got amped and my medicine kicked in. And then Carly came from LA to South Dakota. My days only got prettier from there. Moonshiner Springs is an album about the illumination and gifts born in times of grief and frailty. As steady as hardships arrive, so too comes friendship, flying to the rescue.
