I turned 35 today — what in The Matrix is going on? Taking time today to be with my family, try out a new activity, and just bask in gratitude for being on this side of Heaven.
This age feels like a milestone — honestly, all birthdays do, as my mother reminds me every year. Born premature, 2 lbs 6 oz, almost didn’t make it. But here we are!
I know a lot of people don’t care much for birthdays, but I’d say use them as a reminder to take time for yourself and feel all the love from the people who care about you. And remember — you could’ve been a rock or a tree. But you got the blessing of being a human. How amazing is that.
same day, same woman. more movement. more internal. Mai had talked about wanting something raw and a little mysterious. ones she could reach for years from now. i think these are those.
going back into a 2023 gallery with fresh eyes is its own thing. you edit differently. you see differently. some of these might’ve just stayed on the hard drive. glad they didn’t.

i shot this with Mai in 2023 and recently went back into the gallery to find look for some gems and outtakes. at the time I had only been shooting for I believe a little over a year.
when we talked before the session, she told me she was done figuring herself out. this wasnt about exploration anymore — she knew who she was, where she was going, and she wanted images that showed exactly that. grown. sure of herself. no apologies.
that day we had a solid team on set — Raj doing hair & makeup, and Mai’s friend Tina serving as stylist/creative director holding it all together. it was one of the first times i’d worked with a crew like that. it was a milestone for Mai and quietly one for me too.
she said afterward, “you and Raj and Tina made me feel so taken care of, which i haven’t felt in so long.” that stayed with me.
going back into these images years later, editing them the way i see things now — it reminded me why personal portrait sessions matter to me. there’s something that happens when someone gets to be seen on their own terms.

The vibe we were going for was preppy. Clean, put together, a little sporty. We even threw in an Evian bottle because honestly, why not make it a whole moment.
The blue in the background wasn’t the plan though. I was experimenting with a continuous light and originally wanted something moodier — more dark and editorial. But something in the moment made me want to push color into it. I didn’t think it was going to work.
Then we pulled it up tethered on the computer and surprisingly, we all loved it!
That’s the feeling you chase. The happy accident that ends up being the shot. Sometimes the best creative decisions aren’t decisions at all — just a willingness to try something and see.

I connected with @samantharose.nyce on IG sometime last year, and we hit it off quickly over shared interests — dance, coffee, and food. Then we found out we live across the street from each other. The world is small.
But beyond that, her energy alone made her someone I knew I had to shoot with. Some people just have it.
We set up a test shoot at a Pilates studio she’ll be teaching at — and you already know I love an on-location shoot. I also finally got to collaborate with @samgaymakeup after months of us talking about making it happen.
We had about two hours once hair and makeup was done, and honestly? I love everything we created in that time. So much so that each look is getting its own post — because why not.
