Duluth - we will be at @sacredheartmusiccenter this Friday night with our friends @saltydog.duluth ❤️. Being in Duluth feels complicated to me. I love that city so dang much. I also feel like I’m being stabbed by a thousand tiny daggers when I’m there. I’ll spare you the sentimental details. I haven’t played at Sacred Heart since I was there for Ben’s funeral. In fact the last time I played there I was pregnant with Luella. I’ve always loved singing songs in that space, but now there’s a whole different emotional dimension to wade through in the process. It feels important to me to keep trying to lean into the tiny daggers. I don’t know why. I do know there’s great reward in that particular type of inertia in my healing process. I think the most I can hope for are some bright, familiar faces. Or maybe a love filled room to welcome some new songs or receive some old songs that feel like a warm hug. Having the @saltydog.duluth pals there always helps. Everytime I’ve been lucky enough to catch one of their sets I leave feeling better about the state of things. Whatever it is they’re doing in Duluth it just feels good. I’m honored to be in such sweet company. See you Friday. Get your tickets early… it just eases everyone’s mind when ya do. And we appreciate it.

mothers day is this week. my fourth as a mother, my third as a solo mom, and my first without my own mother.
i wrote this song in the first few months of our daughters life, and in many ways the first few months of my new life… everything had changed, everything looked and felt different, I was no longer just myself but instead tethered on a cellular level to a love that felt intuitive and expansive. that shit changes you. it becomes the filter through which you view all things. and i don’t think it ever goes away.
motherhood is joyful and hard and imperfect. it feels like my life’s most noble work and i’m only just a few years in. i see and feel my own mother working through me and i use her love as an anchor. i’m grateful.
i see you, mothers. i hope you feel proud and inspired by your infinite love.

A golden afternoon was spent with these five remarkable women ✨ We were also incredibly grateful for @big_tall_jake ’s generous hospitality in his sanctuary, the quiet and present company, and a warm embrace from the surrounding natural landscape.
This space allowed us to frolic, be free, laugh, and find safety together as these musicians embraced the creation of something new.

Some wind for your late September sails…. Last year around this time, I asked some friends to get together to play a song. I brought a slightly out of tune guitar, Alan brought his fond memories of sailboats, Emma brought her simple and calming rhythmic presence, and I told Jerree to bring her voice and she said “how ‘bout an accordion, too?” We hopped on a boat that I used to spend time racing on and we came away with a little performance that captured a small slice of space and time that we were all here together sharing air on this good earth.
I have so much to say about this place but I’ll spare you all the sentimental details. I’ll be leaving here soon and I haven’t quite wrapped my head around what that will look and feel like. Duluth as a tangible place and as an abstract concept make up so much of my work and identity and I have yet to grasp how I’ll unravel myself from here. I don’t want to, but alas, it is what I need to do in this next chapter. After Ben’s death and the chaos that followed I put this moment in the back of my mind, but I’m glad it rolled back around and I’m sharing it here as a reminder of the foundational connections that make up our sense of self and sense of place, that we are not all just drifting aimlessly but that we are also anchored by the people and places that make us who we are.
Many thanks to @jerreesmall , @lowtheband , and @ladynorthcountry for being good sports, for @keelyzynda for filming and @ethanfgibbs trying to capture sound on a windy sailboat on Lake Superior. Of course many thanks to the Minnesota State Arts Board for the funding and to the Papa Gaucho crew for letting us crash their sailing party. Duluth, I love you.
Life has been heavy and filled with grief after losing my sweetheart unexpectedly in February. In the darkness of it all I wanted to share a bright spot. A brief and candid moment in time that means so much to me - our daughter and I last August in the garden surrounded by the plants and food and life her daddy and I grew from seed and nurtured together as a family, before our lives would be forever altered. It’s become so clear to me just how much each and every moment we are here together is an absolute gift and I just keep trying to lean into the mystery of it all.
I still am so uncertain what this life will look like for me, for us, moving forward. But I do know there are still songs to be shared in some shape or form and I’m blessed to be walking on this good earth with the sun on my face and unraveling the great unknown with each of you. Even when it’s hard. Even when it’s painful. Especially when it’s bright and messy and imperfect.
This video was shot by Keely Zynda with additional editing support by Ethan Gibbs. Thanks to the great state of Minnesota for the funding to do this type of work (full credits and info on that at the end of the video) and connect and create in ways that highlight this region and make us feel more human.
