I couldn’t be happier that my project Heataly has been recognized with the first place at the Rovinj Photo Days 2026 in the Landscape category. Heataly is a journey through the contradictions of Italy’s iconic landscapes and the identity they embody. It portrays places where beauty and vulnerability coexist, mirroring a country suspended between a romantic image, once celebrated as timeless, and a the future that demands urgent choices. A few months ago I photographed “Nave Trieste” docked in the port of my city, shortly after it had been completed. At 245 meters long, it is the largest warship built in Italy since World War II. Looking at these images in light of what has been happening in recent days feels different. War has once again taken over the public conversation. Governments are increasing defence budgets, building new weapons, preparing for new conflicts. And yet, while more and more resources are directed toward the machinery of war, the largest threat we collectively face keeps unfolding in plain sight: the climate crisis. As the horizon fills again with the infrastructure of war, it becomes harder not to wonder which direction the world is actually choosing. #war #climatecrisis #documentaryphotography #heataly #italy

Today, the #Milanocortina2026 Winter Olympics begin. A global spectacle built on a very high cost: water, energy, infrastructure, entire territories pushed to the limit to sustain an event that becomes, year after year,more expensive. We know what needs to be done. We know where the crisis comes from. Yet we keep acting as if it weren't true. Among the official partners is @eni , Italy's oil and gas giant. A direct contributor to the climate crisis, now framed as a guarantor of spectacle. Not a contradiction. #sportwashing White. Immaculate. Like snow. We will talk about races, competitions, and victories, but the real race to win is another one. Bob Dylan sang, “the answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind”. The answer isn't far. In two months, the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics will open. Behind the celebration, the Italian Alps face a double crisis: an outdated ski monoculture and an overtourism that strains landscapes already pushed to their limits. Every winter, vast amounts of public money and enormous quantities of water are used to keep this system alive. Artificial snowmaking in Italy now consumes as much water as one million people need in an entire year. At the same time, mountains overcrowded for just a few peak weeks remain economically fragile for the rest of the year. In a climate warming faster in the Alps than almost anywhere else in Europe, this model is becoming not just expensive but unsustainable. From Heataly, 2025. On the night of November 17th a wave of severe weather struck the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy, causing a deadly landslide and extensive flooding. The Torre River burst its banks, inundating the village of Versa. In picture: A mother and her young daughter sit before a sea thick with mucilage. In the summer of 2024, the Adriatic Sea experienced one of its worst mucilage outbreaks in recent decades. Triggered by prolonged heatwaves, low water circulation, and nutrient overloads, the phenomenon suffocated marine life and forced the closure of some beaches across Italy’s eastern coast.
