Taking the raft as metaphor, I expand “raft” from a life-saving device adrift at sea into a structural condition that temporarily underpins, supports, and shapes form in the process of becoming.
Throughout this series, human figures and plant forms intertwine in states of co-growth.
In this body of work, fragmented figures and mutating plant forms emerge within carefully constructed environments.
Limbs are braced, stems are supported, bodies are partially fused with external frameworks.
The title The Raft carries a quiet tension.
“The Raft” suggests survival and suspension, a structure that keeps one afloat when solid ground is absent. It also evokes a base, like those used in 3D printing where delicate forms require temporary supports.
Solo exhibition “The Raft” with @leogallery.official , opening from May 5th.
Thank you @m.yimin@_studiouma_ and @adchina_official for including my work in the feature.
Always grateful to see these paintings find new contexts and conversations beyond the studio. Another life they’ve now been given.
Thank you for including my work DD-15 in “Law of Desire” - pop-up exhibition at H Queen’s, Central, Hong Kong during Hong Kong Art Week

“All of Doe’s paintings resist easy or convenient conclusions, leaving the viewer somewhat on the back foot—perhaps they too have observed these misplaced, involuntary ‘ghost gestures’ in themselves—leaving the question of whether we can ever truly elude the muscle memory we gain from the inventions we make and live with.” @artnet
