Week 2 @typacentre has been all about preparation: making test plates, sanding copper plates, learning, and drawing. I also had very interesting conversations with an archivist at the Estonian Literary Museum and a friendly local who shared his experiences with the military bunkers in Tartu. I feel like I've done many things but time is passing so quickly

I'll be an artist-in-residence at @typacentre during May and June. I feel grateful to return to printmaking after a hiatus. Spring in Tartu is beautiful as well. More updates coming soon :)

I had a wonderful winter @khmessen and am now back in Korea. I already miss the fjords!

Week 4 @khmessen It’s been a wonderful time to draw, write, read, and clear my head while walking around the fjord. I’m grateful to have another month to continue developing a project I’ve been articulating. More soon🙂

Printed at Centrum @centrumresidencies Fort Townsend, WA, USA Seasons I, II: March, Fort Worden, WA, North America was created during my residency at Centrum, located at Fort Worden State Park in Washington, USA. Fort Worden served as a military base from 1902 to 1953, later operated as a hospital during the Spanish flu, and in 1957 functioned as a juvenile detention facility. It has been a state park since 1973. Situated between the shoreline, abandoned batteries, and the Memory Vault—a monument to fallen soldiers—the fort also supported the U.S. Far East Command at the outset of the Korean War. The Centrum residency occupies former barracks that have been repurposed for artists in the visual, literary, and musical fields. Sea winds steadily erode the wooden structures of barracks, while vines, trees, and moss infiltrate the concrete batteries, creating an uncanny atmosphere. The site carries a lingering eeriness; some artists recounted witnessing poltergeist activity, and I occasionally encountered objects believed to be spiritual or haunted. The physical decay parallels the gradual fading of memory—history corroding and lingering only as a shifting trace. These works capture impressions of batteries overtaken by vegetation and landscapes worn down by sea winds. Through them, I reflected on the psychological traces of the war and on stories that were not fully memorialized—memories oxidizing into matter, slowly dissolving in the mind, and ultimately remaining as ghost stories. _ Fort Worden은 1902년부터 1953년까지 군사 기지로 사용되었고, 이후 스페인 독감 치료와 격리를 위한 병원, 1957년에는 청소년 구치소로 사용되었으며 1973년 이후부터는 주립 공원으로 개방되었다. 앞에는 바닷가가, 뒤에는 버려진 기지와 전사자를 기리는 기념비인 Memory Vault가 있는 언덕이 있는 이 요새는 한국전쟁 초기, 미군 극동사령부를 지원하는 용도로 사용되기도 하였다. Centrum 레지던시는 과거 막사였던 건물을 레지던시 공간으로 사용하고 있었다. 바닷바람은 목조 막사를 계속해서 부식시키고 콘크리트 기지들은 이끼로 뒤덮이고 숲의 덩굴과 나무가 내부로 침입하고 있어 기묘한 분위기를 자아냈다. Fort Worden은 전반적으로 으스스한 기운이 감돌고 있었는데 숙소로 사용되고 있는 건물 안에서 폴터가이스트 현상을 목격했다는 작가들도 만났고 종종 기지에 영적인 물건이 버려져 있기도 했다. 물리적인 시간의 흐름 속에서 침식되는 기억과 장소, 그러므로 고정되지 못한 채 유령으로 남아 부식되고 있는 역사. 이 작업은 각각 숲 속에서 식물에 잠식된 기지와 강한 바닷바람에 의해 마모되고 부식되는 풍경에 대한 인상을 색으로 담는다. 이 작업을 통해 나는 기념되어 고정되는 역사 너머, 물질과 기억 속에서 점차 산화되어 유령의 이야기로 남은 전쟁과 사람들의 경험에 대한 감각을 사유하였다.

Seasons I, II: February, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2025) Acrylic on aquatint Paper dimensions: 25.5 x 20 cm / 10 x 7.8 in Image dimensions: 19.5 x 10 cm / 7.6 x 4 in Printed at AGA LAB @aga_lab , Amsterdam, Netherlands This work was created during my residency at AGA LAB in Amsterdam, reflecting on the city's historical and psychological impressions. In the early twentieth century, Amsterdam’s residential districts were divided by religion, politics, and class, reflecting a pillarized social structure. Het Schip—now a museum—was built through the Amsterdam School’s social housing movement to introduce shared public spaces and gradually blur these boundaries. Walking through Amsterdam’s winter landscape, I observed how the canal surfaces turned the scenery into shifting, amorphous images. Research into the Netherlands’ Garden City planning revealed that in a predominantly flat country, when trees or facades block the view, people imagine the horizon extending endlessly beyond them. Drawing on these elements, I came to see Dutch futurity not as the fulfillment of a predetermined future but as an abstraction of the future as a temporal and spatial horizon. Seasons I,II: February, Amsterdam, Netherlands, expresses this impression of Amsterdam in color. - Seasons I, II: February, Amsterdam, Netherlands(2025)는 암스테르담의 AGA LAB 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하며 관찰한 도시의 감각을 표현한다. 20세기 초 암스테르담의 주거지역은 종교, 정치, 계급에 따라 나뉘는 기둥화(pillarization) 사회 구조를 반영하여 사회적 경계에 따라 분리되어 있었다. 현재 박물관으로 운영되는 Het Schip은 암스테르담 스쿨의 사회주택 운동의 일환으로 건설되었으며, 기둥화된 지역 한가운데에 초등학교 등과 같은 공공시설을 건설하여 시간이 지남에 따라 다양한 사회 집단이 서로 교류하며 사회적 경계를 추상화하여 공동체를 형성하도록 하는 역할을 하였다. 겨울의 암스테르담을 산책하며 관찰한 운하의 수면은 주변 풍경을 계속해서 변화하는 추상적이고 비정형적인 이미지로 치환시켰다. 네덜란드의 정원 도시 계획(Garden City plan)을 리서치하며 알게 된 흥미로운 사실 중 하나는, 네덜란드처럼 평지가 많은 나라에서는 숲이나 가로수와 같은 파사드가 시야를 가릴 경우, 그 너머가 끝없이 이어진 평지일 것이라고 상상한다는 점이었다. 나는 20세기 초 암스테르담 스쿨의 도시계획, 운하 수면에 비친 일렁이는 이미지, 그리고 파사드 너머를 수평선처럼 상상하는 이 세 가지 요소에서 네덜란드의 미래성(futurity)에 대한 관념은 계획된 미래를 성취하는 것이 아닌, 미래라는 시공간의 추상화 그 자체에 있다고 느꼈다. 이러한 사유를 통해 Seasons I, II: February, Amsterdam, Netherlands(2025)는 이러한 인상들을 표현한다. #printmaking #etching #amsterdam
