sometimes one shot is worth the whole roll got to see my good friends @dd.island and @drawl.nyc rock at union pool a few weeks back. two of the best live rock bands in this city right now that maybe you don’t know, and also some of the best people. @dd.island is headed out on tour to sxsw and a bunch of other places, go see em if they’re near you and say hi from me! love listening to music, making music, studios, stages, the whole deal. my studio will be back soon, kindly let me know if you want to come by. or come to my house and listen to the best speakers you’ve probably ever heard. there’s gonna be a lot of music coming out this spring and summer that i produced, engineered, and played on which i’m so excited for you to hear. love you all

4. producing has led me on countless strange and beautiful adventures around new york, and this one was showing up to an empty parking lot in between a garbage truck repair depot and some railroad tracks to loan some gear and shoot some bts on set of the latest billy woods video for @backwoodzstudioz . i think the shots turned out quite nicely, and i snuck in a bit of sound work on the video too. a big well done to all those involved: billy woods, @augustfanon , @backwoodzstudioz , @fatboi_sharif , and @probablevoltages : henry, @william.h.curry , and @therealbrookegoldman photos in order: fatboi sharif and henry between takes, henry and will, sharif and one of the extras who had some amazing stories to tell, orlando (@orlan.do ) watching over us, some kind of underexposure I kinda liked, and lastly will again “Funny Games” feat. Studio rebuild is in full swing, so let’s look at another project. Producing ‘Phoenix’ by @dice_blunder was all about having fun exploring layers and texture. Nick is a tremendous songwriter, and a lot of our studio time is spent just trying weird sounds and having fun. Reconstruction on my studio @junipersoundnyc *finally* begins today, so while that’s going on I figured I’d post about some records that I’ve worked on, ranging from recently to less recently, starting today with Velvet Empress’s three recent singles: ‘Spoonful of Tar,’ ‘Ephemeral Pearl,’ and ‘Necromancer.’ No project is ever quite the same, and so my role tends to shift slightly from one to another so I can best serve the work. With Heather, it’s tended to be something akin to ‘low end doctor.’ The songs come to me completely formed, and really what I’m contributing is a few small moves to showcase the world that’s already been created. A common thread between the songs is that they come with drum grooves that make me want to bop along, something that immediately drew my attention with Spoonful. In addition to some fairly traditional sweetening and resonance work, I added @fabfilter_plugins Saturn, which is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here (despite being used very gently). Saturating the low end gave the kick this tasty pop, and using Saturn’s ability to split saturation across separate bands allowed me to give most of the rest of the song a little bit more of a push. TL;DR for the artist pals—the drums knock, and I made them knock harder 🙂‍↕️ Gonna leave clips of the other two songs and some of the processing used on them in the latter slides of this post. ‘King Tide’ by @lena_rich is out today! I mixed and co-produced with Lena, who crushed it top to bottom. Bits of singing/guitar from me too, if you know where to look. There’s so much I could say about Lena, and all of it is good. Looking back on it, I feel like she and I have grown up together musically, and it has been so cool to watch from afar as she’s blossomed into the musician she is. Truly someone who had a clear vision, chased it, and made it real. Sold out the album release show to boot! This record was a really challenging one in many ways—my dog died three days into the sessions, among others—and Lena basically didn’t bat an eye through any of it. Always kind, thoughtful, checking in and nudging the record along at the times I couldn’t. I’m so proud of what she made, and the parts that I was able to contribute. Lena, thank you for welcoming me into your musical life all those years ago. What a joy and privilege.
