‚A Small Fiction of My Mother in Beijing’ written and directed by @dorotheasingzhang will have its World Premiere @tiff_net Very happy to be part of this, thank you Dorothea. In Dorothea Sing Zhang’s part-fiction, part-documentary film, her mother, a renowned Chinese opera singer (Geng Qiaoyun 耿巧云) clings to the rhythms of her solitary life-teaching students, maintaining her rigorous physical discipline, and rehearsing for an upcoming performance. Though consumed by her craft, she wrestles with her daughter’s absence. When we were shooting, I did not know what the story would be. I had seen a video of Celine Dion and how she could no longer sing ‘All by Myself’ as she aged and her vocal cords changed, losing abilities with age. Out of fear, I wanted to preserve some images of my mother. With no script or story in mind, I began realizing a small narrative taking shape as we filmed. By the end of the third day of our six-day shoot, I started writing fictional scenes to complement the footage we had already captured. Watching this film now, it feels somewhat like a reenactment of my coming-of-age story.
