‘We wanted to scrutinise a body that is losing its agency. Limbs moving unpredictably and independently from each other rather following a common logical pattern, to symbolise a loss of control of a modern man over their self in sociopolitical, digital and everyday contexts. Some sort of physical ventriloquism. We also had a long conversation on relativity of ‘weird’ as a term in art, and wanted to make something touching yet balancing on the uncomfortable’. César Sautès-Vescovali @_cesarsv_ by Alex Avgud @avgud . Part of ongoing research ‘Degrees of Autonomy’.

In ‘Once…Never…and again…’, associate choreographer Jermaine Spivey invites the dancers to play within structure and surrender to the moment. We can now show you the official trailer! “It’s a work about the dancers surrendering to a state of serious playfulness. The rules of play sustain, fragment and repurpose the structure of the piece. Choreographed dance sequences, and very specifically tuned improvisational tasks have been designed to overwhelm the performers’ senses into a state of authenticity, no judgement, essential action, and… groove. From within that groove, much like jazz musicians, the performers compose. Beginnings feel like endings and repetition alters rather than confirms. What was there before is now something else.  In this work, to search for meaning is a distraction from the appearance of being.” – Jermaine Spivey Part of NDT 2’s programme ‘The Edge of Things’. Choreography: @jamsvy
Music: @samuelvanderveer_
Video: Harmen Straatman ‘The Edge of Things’ is currently on tour in the Netherlands until 8 November. On 27 and 28 December, you can also experience it worldwide via NDT Digital Theatre.

One of the biggest things i’ve learned this year is that GOODBYE is a word that, once you use it, you might not know when and where will be the next time you meet someone again. I’ve been trying my best to keep every single moment alive, to feel it, to be there, even sometimes it’s just not happening, i’m still very grateful to be able to feel losing. It was the last few times i shared the stage with @_cesarsv_ in the duet of “Minus 16” by Ohad Naharni. We had been working closely almost the whole year in different pieces, i got some answers and emotional support little by little during the year, especially in this duet, like how to say good-bye even when i’m not ready to. I guess the best way to handle it is embrace the ups and downs (and the half way up ofc) as the moment comes and goes.
