New blog is up on my website. Link in bio > beauty-native.com > Menu > Blog 🌹 TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide attempt.
I’m fine (🙂↕️) and have been for a long time. Just writing it out now and sharing. Thanks for reading 🫶🏽
My name is Selina - I am a Tohono O’odham & Paiute mother, beauty professional of 15 years, and born & raised in the Bay Area. I opened @nativestudiosalon in 2021 out of necessity. As a hairdresser I was tired of working in fascist salons. I had enough of the unrealistic expectation to “keep politics out of hair”.
Hair is political. It’s sacred. Hair is why my grandmother migrated to Oakland (Huchiun - Ohlone territory) in 1959, from our reservation in southern Arizona (Ali Son in O’odham). Hair is how I provided for my children as a young mother. It’s how my Indigenous family began.
I wanted a space that myself, my peers, and our clients could feel comfortable in. A safe space to provide care while we all try to survive in this wicked colonial system. The exchanges & work we do are resistance. Care is ancestral wisdom. The responsibility in this work is not lost on me. Thank you for the trust! 🤎

*PLEASE LOWER YOUR VOLUME* 🤭
Meet my mother’s pride & joy 🤎
Did you know it takes hairdressers 3x as long to do their family members hair? Yep, it sure does. My sister has been my model at auditions & hair shows. We honestly don’t care what anyone thinks. Can’t you tell? Laughing is our Indigenous medicine 🪶✨
Enjoy this video I finally edited from last December. Thank you sister @pixieshxt - If I can cut all your hair into a pixie, I can cut anyones!

Taking care of Indigenous Oceania hair (Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia) has been one of the best parts of my career. As a mum to two Tongans, this work is close to my heart. Thank you for trusting me!
Ofa atu 🤎 (I can speak more Tongan than O’odham 🤭)
We grew this spring 🌸✨ Becoming a collective of five has been with ease. We’re all professionals that don’t play about our craft or the community! We’ll celebrate our 5 year anniversary as a salon this November 7th, save the date.
Thank you @lara_kaur for these beautiful team photos 🤍
LUPITA 🦋 I received so many messages about this sweet one. They needed their own post! ✨
Still growing my short hair portfolio. Running a pixie special on my booking site until I feel really comfortable. Take advantage 🤍
