MATRIX 3/6 - VIRTUAL SPACE
Space is perception, not geometry. Matrix uses immersive technologies as a tool to reorient our perception and reimagine how we relate to our environment. Interaction and bodily sensations are used as core components and design elements of this experience.
The virtual is a layer of possibilities, where physical constraints still apply but become permeable to certain virtual sensory inputs. Transition spaces are essential when entering the virtual. The temple is the place that exists congruently in both realms. It serves as a container for the immersive experience and functions as this transitional zone.
The experience is not based on the appearance of space or objects, but on how one interacts with them and how one feels within them. The textures used in the virtual environment are soft, translucent and intentionally ambiguous, allowing for interpretation, rather than representation. This visual abstraction shifts the focus toward other sensory inputs. In doing so, it highlights touch, sound, and embodied spatial awareness as meaningful ways of knowing, and getting to know space.

MATRIX 2/6 - TEA CEREMONY
The installation is a rite of passage, structured in four parts: tea ceremony, introduction, immersion, and conversation. The experience is designed for up to two participants at a time, though a larger audience can be present during the ritual.
The tea ceremony is a moment to arrive. Through a shared act of stillness, participants are invited to slow down, to listen, and to open themselves to the story that follows.
The objects were specifically designed and made for this project: the table, crafted from recycled wood by Fredrik Svendgård, and the cups created by @ronald__boer__ , glazed with minerals from rocks found along the North Sea coast. Their materials and textures invite participants to touch and to experience the project through tactile interaction rather than through vision alone.

MATRIX 1/6 - INTRODUCTION
On March 6 I had the pleasure of presenting my graduation project Matrix at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture!
Matrix approaches the North Sea as a protagonist: a living entity rather than an abstract concept of nature. The project investigates a relational approach, framing the North Sea as a conversation partner we can learn to listen to and get to know.
The project integrates landscape architecture, spatial narratives, and spatiality across different dimensions with research and fieldwork through photography, film, writing, philosophical reflection, and a very personal perspective. It explores the potential of immersive spaces for future applications, including non-material environments and alternative ways of experiencing space.
By portraying the landscapes of the North Sea as living environments to be felt and inhabited, the project reflects on how we can shift our perception of space, nature, and ourselves in order to respond meaningfully to the climate crisis.

Creating portraits is a way of observing and sculpting that is not bound to any particular medium; it is a method of getting to know someone.
Matrix is an immersive experience across physical and virtual space, portraying the North Sea as living environments to be felt and inhabited and simulating an embodied way of being in the world that recalls our elemental relationship with nature.
It is a space that asks you to see with fresh eyes, reconnect with your senses, and discover a new, or perhaps rediscover an old, sense of wonder.

Painting portraits has taught me a way of observing and sculpting that I can carry into other media as well. I can depict landscapes the same way I depict faces. They’re not so different after all.
Matrix explores the question: How can we shift our perception of space, nature, and ourselves in order to respond sensibly to climate change, not through control, but through belonging?
