THE COMPANY WE KEEP | Leading with heart according to @_amylow_ | words by @karen.gif | photography by @m.a.y.a.p
This month on The Company We Keep, Karen Leong spoke with Amy Low, CEO of The Social Outfit.
From retail assistant to lawyer to CEO, Amy Low’s journey proves that fashion can be both purposeful and powerful.
At the helm of The Social Outfit, she champions ethical design, circular production, and the empowerment of refugee and migrant women—transforming deadstock into garments, and skills into futures. Driven by value-led leadership, she’s making a tangible mark on both the industry and the community it serves.

5 days of fun in HK playing tourist, eating at 100 year old restaurants and tiny Michelin noodle spots, drinking on the street and at award winning bars, island hopping and splashing in 24°c water temps. Last pic is what the locals thought of my cantonese.
Lucky my favourite locals had my back and looked after us so well ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @tonytonitoneko@mrmadar

In episode 4 of season 9, I chat with @_amylow_ Brand and Marketing Director @pipinghotaustralia While fashion may have been a defining force for generations of her family, culture and community are at the heart of Amy’s history. Whether she’s supporting sustainable ocean research in line with Piping Hot and @unicef or working as a Board member for a not-for-profit that provides fashion-focussed employment & training to refugees, Amy carefully applies passion to purpose, and does it with colour and charisma. Her affection for the quote “I’m trendy as f*ck but I don’t want the world to blow up” gives us a window into Amy’s style and as we sit at Bondi Beach on a sunny afternoon and feel the inherent joy that comes with being by the ocean, Amy shares the joy and meaning that sits with her story.

IN THE WAKE OF PROGRESS
90 minutes flew by discussing what it will take for the fashion industry to be sustainable at the @australianmuseum for @sydney_festival with @_ethros_@biancaspender@valya___z .
With no singular definition or methodology for sustainable fashion, we covered a lot of ground (a few of my notes in the slideshow). Lots of tough questions!
A wonderful opportunity to share the work of @thesocialoutfit and @pipinghotaustralia . Both tackling sustainability in very different ways.
Many thanks to the Sydney Festival team for putting sustainable fashion on the agenda. Fashion is more complex than it appears. We need to open up more conversations to progress solutions and be accountable for change.
