Three years ago, the Salt Lake City Public Art Program unveiled āOut Of The Blueā, a life-sized humpback whale sculpture breaching out of a traffic circle in the 9th and 9th neighborhood. Why a whale? Utah doesnāt have sea creatures! The 9th and 9th Whale is a monument to a community where people from all backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures can find a sense of belonging.

Since the Whaleās dedication in April 2022, the local Wasatch Mountains have seen some of the greatest snow years ever, including one of the snowiest springs on record immediately following the sculptureās unveiling, and the 2022-23 winter that delivered 903+ inches of powder. This inspired The Church of the Sacred Whale of Ninth and Ninth, celebrating the Sacred Whale who is credited with delivering much needed moisture to our drought-stricken region. You can see the Whale doing its thing today š§ļø

The sweetest customer shopping at my @fisherartmarket booth saw one of my Kokanee salmon pieces and knew right away that she wanted a custom installed piece for her 24-inch front porch window! I got to use some gorgeous glass that Iāve been hanging onto for years to accomplish the splashy water scene and this is the result! There are so many different ways to design and cut a stained glass pattern, I usually like to focus on a center piece like a rondel, agate, or particularly special piece of glass, then let the design emanate from there, somewhat organically. Then I cut out the paper pattern, trace onto glass, and get to cutting!
This sheet glass and blown glass rondel is from @holdmanstudios , whose immensely talented artisans create many of the stained glass panels for the LDS Temples in the US and around the world.

I always wanted to be an art teacher when I was growing up. Iām the granddaughter of two professional artists and am so fortunate to have a mother who always fostered my creativity. I had incredible art teachers and even went to art college for a moment. I ended up going a different direction and have been a grant writer and nonprofit finance professional for over a decade, but making and teaching stained glass has been SO fulfilling. Elementary school-aged me is so happy that I ended up being an art teacher after all š
