Images from Nabatieh and Saida capture the brutal reality unfolding in southern Lebanon: a ceasefire on paper, but continued Israeli attacks on the ground. Paramedics, first responders and civilians are still being killed, as communities already devastated by war face the daily threat of violence.

It’s always great to see one of my photographs used as the cover image by a leading French newspaper such as Libération, through an assignment for Getty Images. Thank you to the Getty Images editorial team @jayrdavies , @stilotta and @picturesjane for trusting my work. This photograph, taken in Nabatieh, bears witness to the brutality that Lebanese civilians are forced to endure every day under the aggression of the Israeli army. A special mention goes to the @es3af_nabatieh paramedic team, from whose headquarters I was able to take this image, and who continue to risk their lives every day to save their fellow citizens. It is crucial to remember that more than 100 paramedics have been killed since the beginning of the war, and that even with a ceasefire supposedly in place, hardly a day goes by without one of them becoming the deliberate target of an Israeli attack.

The ceasefire in Lebanon, announced on April 16 and later extended for three weeks, has not stopped the violence. The UN has warned of continued hostilities since it came into effect, with new deaths, evacuation orders, and more than 114,000 people still sheltering in collective centers. According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, Israeli attacks have killed at least 2,659 people and wounded 8,183 since March 2. For @gettyimages

Even after the ceasefire, life in southern Lebanon remains marked by fear. Israeli attacks continue to claim lives, while families who had only just begun returning home are once again seeking shelter, unsure if the next strike will hit their village. For many in the south, the ceasefire has not brought safety, only a fragile pause overshadowed by grief, uncertainty, and displacement. For @gettyimages

Israel and Lebanon have entered a temporary ceasefire, as displaced families begin returning to southern Lebanon after weeks of fighting. However, Israel’s indication it will continue military pressure on Hezbollah raises concerns that renewed escalation could again put civilians at risk and undermine the fragile truce. In Nabatieh and across its district, ambulances and rescue crews have been repeatedly struck in recent days, in attacks that have killed and wounded paramedics and turned lifesaving missions into death traps. From the killing of Joud (16) and Ali (22), two rescue workers on March 25 as they headed to assist the injured on a clearly marked ambulance motorbike, to later strikes on ambulances in Kfar Tebnit and along the road between Qaaqaaiyet al-Jisr and Kfar Dajjal, the message has been devastatingly clear: even those rushing to save lives are not being spared. Health officials and humanitarian organizations warn that these attacks are not only taking an immediate human toll, but also dismantling the emergency response system civilians depend on to survive. Part 2 of the photo story I recently shot for @de_volkskrant A huge thank you to the @es3af_nabatieh family for allowing us to shed light on the courageous work they do, risking their lives every single day.

Lebanon is being pushed deeper into ruin as Israeli strikes expand, driving more civilians from their homes and placing Beirut under immense humanitarian strain. As the bombing spreads, so do fear, anger, and the risk of internal fracture, with sectarian and political tensions sharpening around Hezbollah. What is unfolding is not only a military escalation, but the slow suffocation of a country already worn thin, forced to absorb yet another chapter of devastation. As the war in Lebanon nears its fourth week, the death toll has surpassed 1,000 and more than one million people have been displaced. The destruction of key bridges has left the country’s south isolated and increasingly vulnerable to a ground offensive already underway by the Israeli army. For @gettyimages
