I’ll be on @refugeworldwide again tomorrow, this time with a new show about sound design in cinema, starting with an hour long exploration of the polyphonic cinema of Lucrecia Martel. Martel describes the experience of cinema as a three dimensional swimming pool, where images flow along a one-dimensional surface, and sound fills the spaces that defy visual narration, immersing the viewer (or listener) in the story. Join me for a swim through Martel’s disorienting soundscapes at 2PM 🌊

Recently I’ve been feeling extra nostalgic about home, so this mix I submitted to NTS feels pretty timely.
I’ll be on in the morning tomorrow with an hour of Irish releases and found sound from friends and strangers across the island. Shout-out to my little brother’s friend on the trumpet! I’ve included Seamus Heaney reading a poem I heard him recite in Armagh’s Marketplace Theatre as a child that stuck with me for its use of audio-sensory nostalgia. There’s also a clip of a news report from when the British army left South Armagh in 2007, nine years after the peace process was signed when I was five.
The title of the mix, and the image I chose are inspired by the overgrown and abandoned 18th century church and graveyard in the village, where we played hide and seek as kids. This is a musical collage, an ode to Ireland and to the strange and spooky and beautiful corner of it that I grew up in; Camlough.

Back on @refugeworldwide tomorrow, this time talking about Water Lilies, Céline Sciamma’s debut feature. In this queer coming-of-age story, Sciamma sculpts desire, discomfort, and identity through sparse dialogue and meticulously controlled diegetic sound. Come jump into the pool with me 🌊
