“Alterity” is a performance and installation by Jacco Gardner and a team of creative minds who shaped its various elements.
While Gardner plays himself, the philosophical text he narrates was researched and written by writer and art historian María Pandiello (
@visions_of_manuscripts ,
@maria.pandiello ), who holds a PhD in Art History specializing in medieval manuscripts and alchemical iconography. She approaches machine creativity through perspectives including alchemy and mythology.
Futurist Edwin Gardner (
@edwingardner ) provided essential bibliography and experience from his work in worldbuilding and science fiction scenario development.
Filmmaker Lucas Laujedo (
@8obetc ) worked with historic footage to visualize a “fractured memory-dream state” for the installation and operates a live camera feed during the performance.
UpscaleXR (
@upscaleXR ) handled production, materializing Gardner’s sometimes unusual technical requests, from finding old computers and robotic lights to researching rear-projection materials, transport, and planning.
Jacco Gardner handled the rest: programming in legacy environments like MAX, M, VAST, and KML, and experimenting with the convergence of storytelling, technology, and live improvisation. This was enabled by years of legacy technology research combined with his doctoral research project “Temporal Constructs,” which began this month with
@hogeschoolinholland and
@dekunstvanhku
Through this collaboration, Alterity has grown and matured conceptually, finding common ground across multiple perspectives to create a unique experience.
Alterity is supported by
@stimuleringsfonds Digitale Cultuur and set to premiere at
@iffr on 30+31 of January. The installation will perform by its own throughout the week following these performances.
