Ruiying Zeng (@ruiruidotcom ) is an emerging Graphic Designer and Illustrator hailing from Xiamen / China now based in Naarm / Melbourne. She has quickly accumulated an impressive number of accolades (JAGDA, Tokyo TDC and Design 360° to name a few) for her high-energy and finely-tuned projects. For ‘Trust The Process’, Ruiying will share the layers, symbolism and narratives that form her distinctive visual style and creative process.

Trust The Process

For our fourth series celebrating Creativity Through Community, we took over a warehouse space in Naarm to unpack and demystify the creative process. Our talented lineup, @ruiruidotcom + @passivekneeling + @davidportebeckefeld were tasked with creating a new piece of work and sharing the entire process from start to finish, highlighting all the decisions made along the way.
No stone was left unturned as we got to peek behind the curtain of each finished piece:
🎨 Ruiying shared how to freakify simple, AI-promted imagery through RAM-crushing image manipulation and layering.
⚔️ Tom reminded us that inspiration can come from anywhere — even low-balling hagglers — in his Medieval Marketplace simulation.
🏺 David surprised us all with his VR sculpting technique and emphasised the importance of backing your artistic vision.
Each deep-dive reiterated that every great project starts small, before transforming into something exceptional through constant iteration (i.e umm-ing, ahh-ing and a healthy pinch of procrastination). Thank you again to everyone to braved the weather. We’ll see you again soon 🫵🥹

David Porte Beckefeld (@davidportebeckefeld ) is a 3D Artist and Designer reimagining sculpture and spaces through future-forward creative tools. His attention to craft and embrace of new technologies has landed him projects with Jordan, Microsoft and a collaboration with Paul Nicholson (the creator of the Aphex Twin logo). For ‘Trust The Process’, David will showcase how he seamlessly jumps from program-to-program, creates from memory and sculpts possible futures.

Tom Vanderzeil (@passive.kneeling ) is a VJ and Director whose experimental work has cemented him as the go-to collaborator for some of your favourite music artists. Having revamped the stage visuals for Bag Raiders, directing for Teether and Kuya Neil, and touring across South East Asia with a collective of the region’s most exciting new rappers, Tom’s creative world-building is showing no signs of slowing down. For ‘Trust The Process’, Tom will unpack how he pushes technology (both old and new) to their limits within his creative practice.

BTS look of @bamitssam latest experiment during a layover in Singapore ✨
“I had a 13 hour layover in Singapore (ft. Mary Sue)...
Aside from eating sum chicken rice n mangosteens, I knew I wanted to shoot something in Singapore during my layover. I hit the homie @sweetmarysue & we shot a music video for his track ‘Phantom’.
I experimented with Adobe’s Gen Ai on Photoshop and made some flips thru frame by frame sequences to create a world of my own. Shouts SG! Shouts Mary Sue!”
