13 years ago today I pitched an idea. A place where anyone could walk in with curiosity and leave having made something with their own hands. A community workshop. A place to learn, build, and belong. I had no idea what it would become. Looking at these early photos I see a rough space and a whole lot of belief that this thing was worth building. We figured it out together as we went. What I’m most proud of isn’t the space. It’s the people. The members who found their creative voice here for the first time. The makers who built businesses, launched products, and discovered skills they didn’t know they had. The ones who moved away and took the maker ethos with them into the world. You’re out there building things, teaching others, starting your own spaces. That’s the real impact. And the ones still here. Still showing up. Still making things. You are this place. This Friday at our Open House I’ll be sharing a slide deck and some never before seen photos and stories from the last 13 years. Come celebrate another month with this incredible community. Patrick Mullins of @wearerougeva builds his immersive theater productions out of his studio at @757makerspace . Each show grows a different team and a new layer of craft. Members, collaborators, artists. And new technology they learn, adapt, and build into the experience. For “What Remains” at @hermitagemuseumva , that included spatial audio through headsets that guided you through the house. And parts of the set built here. Thom White @thom_f_white , architect and member, designed and cut the pieces himself on our @shopbottools CNC. First time flying solo at this scale on a tool like this. Zak decided to machine his own guitar body. Starting by machining the clamps to hold it. Then he made the guitar. After that he was cutting boat seat upholstery with another member, swapping in a @altitudecraft.official drag knife to do it. All on the same table. All in the same afternoon. That’s what a @shopbottools CNC does when you stop thinking of it just as a “wood router”. What’s the one thing you’d build if equipment wasn’t the excuse anymore? Better tools. 3 pounds of bees arrived at 757 Makerspace today. Via USPS. Because that’s a thing. ❤️ 🐝 @roadsteadmontessori students suited up with @jamie.dungan to help get our new colony settled into their hive in the community garden. Some of them were nervous walking in. By the end they were sitting on the ground next to the hive in their suits. Watching. Listening. Learning. No stings. Just 3 pounds of bees, a handful of kids, and one of those afternoons you don’t forget. The hive is home. The garden is growing. More to come. 🐝🌱
