Gabriel Arios Hudson is an MFA Candidate at UNM, a product of the Philippines, assembled in Austin, Texas, packaged in Buena Vista, Colorado, formerly distributed through Illinois and
Upper Michigan, and currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“To return to community = balikbayan” is a non-traditional book about growing up mix-cultured in the 21st century United States. Gabriel needed more than words and images to accomplish
this, so they dispersed their written words amongst sculptures including video, audio, and mixed media.
Gabriel took the literal cardboard boxes that enable our society to function, and the psychic, mental, metaphysical, socio-emotional, societally-constructed boxes that also shape
individual people and communities, and made art from harvesting, ripping, shredding, soaking, pulping, blending, then re-sculpting these boxes.
Gabriel found a sense of futuristic self-determination, present fulfillment, and a capacity to contribute to old-old efforts of social engagement by playing in the box, outside of the box, but
most of all: with the box

Current exhibiting artist Gregg Deal takes the hard-hitting, truth-telling themes of his nationally renowned visual art to the stage as frontman for Dead Pioneers—a visceral fusion of spoken word and punk born from his performance art piece, The Punk Pan-Indian Romantic Comedy. This event is in conjunction with The Other Side of the Tracks, a traveling exhibition guest curated by Jorge Rojas, now on view in Albuquerque at 516 ARTS.
