May is Jewish American Heritage Month! Especially during a time when antisemitism is on the rise, I'm grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the many contributions that Jewish folks have made to our city and our country, and for the partnership of organizations like the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs in making our city even better.
May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month! I am so grateful for the partnership of organizations like Chinese Mutual Aid Association, Indo-American Center, and the Japanese American Service Center, as well as the many AAPI-owned businesses like Minyoli, Side Practice, and Kanin that enrich the 40th Ward.
Contractors will soon begin work on the long-awaited Elise Malary Plaza! This project will involve closing Catalpa Avenue between Clark and Ashland to traffic, so we can turn the space into a beautified pedestrian plaza where the community can gather together, host events, and browse the local farmer’s market during the summer season.

Two days ago, I was joined by community as we celebrated a landmark@Moment for our city - The ribbon cutting for Haven on Lincoln, a shelter for the unhoused with wraparound onsite services and individual units for those who need them. It is one of the honor of my life to be able to make this vision come to fruition for our unhoused neighbors in this moment and going forward. It is the legacy of a lifetime, and we have so much more work to do. Thank you SO much for electing me to be the Alder and allowing me the opportunity to help create the Chicago we all believe in! Many thanks to all involved from our 40th Ward staff and neighbors to the city departments!
PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT: Friday May 8th 6pm at Winchester and Hood - there is an individual experiencing mental health crisis. Neighbors are advised to allow CPD and SWAT room to address the situation.
A former motel in the 40th ward is now the site of The Haven on Lincoln.
This sustainable, trauma-informed non-congregate shelter will provide 37 private rooms to our neighbors experiencing homelessness, along with healing spaces and wraparound support services. DOH was proud to support this adaptive reuse project with a $14M investment.

We received word from @chicagocta about Brown Line track maintenance work scheduled for Saturday, May 9th, from 4am–4pm (or until complete). At the Kedzie station, boarding and exiting of all trains will occur on the Loop-bound side of the platform. Trains in both directions will operate on the same track between Francisco and Kimball, which will result in delays. Please plan additional time for your travel!
