Terrell #streetportrait
The sun was shining so brightly on this young man. I asked for a portrait. This brief interaction reminded me that my street photography was more about these connections and building community than it ever was about photography.
In this lifetime, I’ve had the distinct honor of showcasing my work in galleries, museums, and public art spaces. However, as an artist, there is no exhibit I hold higher than when my work is exhibited in the homes of the families I photograph. Ultimately I know this work will exhibit perpetually, passed down from generation to generations.
In this spirit I am excited to collaborate with Andrea Walls ( @urbanarchivist )and The Museum of Black Joy to present a community offering for Black Futures Month.
I will Photograph Black family portraits every Wednesdays in the month of February at no cost to particpants. We are providing free museum-quality prints of Black family portraits, beautifully framed, as a gift to the community.

Grateful for all blessings big, small, and everything in between. Mostly I am thankful that I have the honor of raising this young lion. We’ve been through more than most could imagine and it only made us stronger.

Special thanks to @missaimena for making these images. I’m not a shoemaker but what they say about the shoemaker’s son applies here. I have so few good pictures of my sun and I together I am beyond grateful for these wonderful images.🙏🏿

As Black History Month unfolds, and we sit in conversations around what Black lives have or haven’t been allowed to be, a number of photographers here have decided to spend the month putting forward some of those faces and stories of Black life today that continues to be marginalized and undervalued—so as to ensure that any narrative around what it means to live a Black life does the work of commemorating also the every day folk who have not been a part of the larger historical record, and may otherwise go unseen. We will be sharing images that speak to Black presence in relation to education, family, food, military and love to name a few.
