A place shaped by centuries of exchange. đ
Sicily has long captured the imaginationâfrom The Godfather to The White Lotusâbut its story runs much deeper. As the largest island in the Mediterranean, it has been a meeting point for cultures, empires, and ideas for thousands of years.
In this course, weâll trace that layered history, exploring how civilizations collided and combined to shape Sicilyâs distinctive artistic and cultural identity.

Weaving, as a way of knowing. â¨đˇď¸
For the Navajo (DinĂŠ) people, weaving touches all aspects of life. According to tradition, this knowledge was gifted by NaâashjĂŠâii AsdzĂĄĂĄ (Spider Woman)âa way to create, to sustain, and to remain connected.
Rooted in hĂłzhĂłâa sense of harmony and balance in alignment with the natural worldâeach textile carries meaning. Geometric forms reflect landscape, weather, and spiritual presence, extending beyond design into lived experience.
Navajo textiles are part of the Barnes collection, where they exist in conversation with works across cultures and time.
See them in person and spend time looking closely.

What happens when a painting becomes a poem? âď¸
CĂŠzanneâs apples, tables, and quiet arrangements have long drawn poets inâfrom Rainer Maria Rilke to William Carlos Williams and Allen Ginsberg. Something about their presence, their âstubborn thereness,â continues to resonate across forms.
In this course, weâll place CĂŠzanneâs paintings in conversation with poetryâsome written in direct response to his work, others offering unexpected connections. Through reading, discussion, and moments of free writing, weâll explore what emerges between image and language.
Led by Naina Saligram, a Barnes fellow with a passion for interdisciplinary approaches to modernism.

What does a landscape sound like? đś
A coastline becomes an overture. A field unfolds like a symphony. Across art and music, artists have long translated the natural world into rhythm, tone, and color.
Join us in the galleries as we explore these connectionsâmoving between painting and sound, from Beethovenâs Pastoral Symphony to Mendelssohnâs Hebrides Overture, and the atmospheric compositions of Jean Sibelius. Led by William L. Coleman, Brandywine Museum of Art's (@brandywinemuseum ) director of the Wyeth Study Center and a specialist in the meeting of music and painting, this session invites you to consider how artists have imagined landscape across mediums.
