Shout out to the
@citifieldbikebus - it’s an incredible community ride that makes getting to the game not only fun, but much safer. 🚲⚾️
But
@mets and
@citifield still need to push the city and state for safer pedestrian and bicycle access across the Grand Central Parkway.
Right now, the crossing remains dangerous.
The bike bus leaders literally bring stop signs and safety vests to stop traffic so families, kids and riders can cross safely together. Without safety in numbers, crossing solo can be intimidating and risky - especially when there’s no traffic backup or
@nypd presence.
And that’s the frustrating part: getting to Citi Field by bike has improved dramatically from so many directions. From Manhattan, Astoria and beyond, riders can connect through protected routes, transition onto Northern Blvd, and then into the calm and safety of
@34_ave all the way to 114th Street.
@nyc_dot has made a lot of improvements.
The city also improved the first crossing to reach the narrow bridge - but the Grand Central crossing itself is still treacherous for pedestrians and cyclists trying to navigate highway-speed traffic.
This impacts access to:
⚾️ Citi Field
🎾 The USTA Tennis Center
🌳 Flushing Meadows Corona Park
🏘️ Thousands of new apartments nearby
⚽️ The future NYCFC stadium
🎰 Future park, hotel and casino development
The number of people walking and biking here is only going to grow.
So why hasn’t this been fixed?
This falls across both
@nys_dot and
@nyc_dot , but years go by and there is still no safe permanent infrastructure solution. It’s used by pedestrians and bicyclists 365 days a year and it’s only marginally safer on game days.
It seems as though it will take a serious life ending accident to finally get the state and city agencies to get something done. We should not have to wait for a tragedy before action is finally taken.
Maybe
@nycmayor can help move this forward before that.
