Land of light 19.12.25-09.02.25 Donia Jornod @doniajornod Vernissage 18.12.25 “A Land of Light – With endless horizons – And sites you won’t forget.” This slogan from a travel agency slowly moves across the screen. The font is reminiscent of the typography used in advertising and propaganda films of the 1950s. The neon green colour of it promises artificial fantasy worlds that exist only in the minds of those who long for them. In a close-up, the camera subtly circles an animated date palm. A seductive illusion that makes you forget everything else. The video screen is embedded in an installation of dusty carpets, a golden plastic decor and delicate wallpaper depicting a landscape in which hardly anything natural can be recognised. In her work, Donia Jornod examines how images travel ahead of bodies and spread ideologies that circulate via screens, advertising and digital platforms. The visual language of the tourism industry thus creates fictional places and othering, a necessary condition for the colonial project. It nourished the utopia of the Elsewhere. The artist researched the imagery of colonised Algeria, which gained its independence in 1962 after 132 years. She came across numerous examples of this visual language, in which tourism served as a political instrument. Conquered territories were advertised with ‘exotic’ images that suggested an artificial paradise while concealing the violence and brutality of the colonial reality.  Perhaps the artist proposes to resist the seduction and ask ourselves: What did the real palm trees actually witness? And what was the cost of our longing at the time and what is it today? 345OFF.SPACE Mythenquai 345 (bridge) 8038 Zurich [email protected] 345off.space With generous support from Albert Huber-Stiftung

homo:li//programacion-obsoleta 04.11.25-02.11.25 Studio Fumo @fumo.oo0 With the work homo:li//programacion-obsoleta Studio Fumo are bridging the realities of overconsumption of energy that is provided by batteries and their crucial component lithium in Switzerland, and the realities of lithium production abroad. The industry causes erasure of peoples and land in the so-called Lithium Triangle between Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. The absence of attention towards the scooters gathered at the bridge for the exhibition’s opening reveals a new reality. A reality of moving through a space that is covered with these machines, laying awkwardly on the sides of our pavements. The battery, as a symbol of responsible green living, is apparently all but sustainable or ecologically friendly. Vast volumes of water are needed to extract lithium, but the reserves are mostly located in drought-prone regions, which leaves the people living in those regions forcibly displaced. Yet the rhetoric around the transition to electric mobility stays unchanged or even becomes more ramped up in the urge to move to fully electric vehicles. Even their own obsolescence is artificially sped up, programmed, and predestined by the producers to boost the demand. The extraction itself is rushed, accelerated, all neo-, but colonial.  The unsettling absurdity of this rhetoric is translated through the video collage that the passers-by can see from the bridge. The duo produced this video during their residency in Argentina. “Technodictatura” becomes the neon-green thread that weaves through the piece. Images of Elon Musk and Javier Milei announcing their friendship, Difunta Correa’s shrines surrounded by empty water bottles in search of divination, the caricature of the homo:li — the lithium man — driving through the desert, an endlessly rotating hoverboard, glitching, rushing through the screen. These images arrive in Switzerland, which is championing e-waste production in Europe, and here, shocking numbers of lithium production companies are residing. Acceleration, greenwashing, extraction, and bizarreness are all coming through this work. With generous support from Albert Huber-Stiftung

Houses That Could Be Used For Living But Aren't Artist Duo Schellinger Zaugg @frauzaugg Free Walking Tours 16.08.24 24.08.24 01.09.24 During three consecutive weeks the artist duo Schellinger Zaugg gave us (and many more) the pleasure and interest of learning more about the Kreis 1 in Zurich. Leading us from empty houses to buildings used as offices in the downtown area, the Duo shared their research and knowledge about those "Houses That Could Be Used For Living But Aren’t", digging into historical, economical research and gentrification processes through the years. The Duo used the vitrine of the off.space as a billboard to advertise for the tours, enabling the passers-by to register through a simple what's app registration. 📷 @wassiliwidmer @sophisticated.jpegs @lilypellaud
