Kyle Starks knows exactly how to make the best use of genres and tropes in the comics medium. Karate Prom, one of his lesser-known graphic novels, is a coming-of-age sendup full of fisticuffs, high school romance, and ninjas. The cartooning is excellent as always and Starks’ signature creative characters are well-developed and endearing. Although this targets a younger audience, it doesn’t make it any less of an entertaining adventure as Don “TheDragonWilson” Jones vies for the heart of Sam Steadman. They encounter leagues of opponents, a notorious crime family, and teenage feelings. I love the witty one-liners Starks sprinkles throughout every comic. The colorful cast including my favorite Punchman also shines throughout. I’m glad that this project came out of a rough year and that many others can enjoy this action-packed tale. #karateprom #kylestarks #firstsecond #graphicnovel #comics

💥 Graphic novel review: Clara & the Devil, Volume 1 I recently finished reading this first installment in the series About the book: Clara has the rest of her life figured out. She’ll graduate college with the support of her best friend, Jonah; marry her adoring boyfriend; take a full-time job at her local library; and settle down in her small seaside hometown. But when an unusual tourist—tall, dark, and infernal—comes to town, Clara’s careful plans quickly start to unravel. And even while the stranger, who openly calls himself the devil, strikes up a situationship with Jonah, he continues to tempt Clara with reckless talk of power, ambition, and lust. Over the course of one sultry summer, tensions between Clara, Jonah, and the devil mount to an intolerable degree, and Clara is forced to confront the desires she’s kept secret her whole life, even from herself. This deliciously dark tale of Faustian bargains and seduction kicks off a series that explores artistry and power through the temptation of the seven deadly sins. My thoughts: This book was hypnotizing. Throughout the atoey I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of the characters. Was the Devil really who he said he was? What was he after? Why Clara? She repeatedly claims to be happy, yet complains of the emptyness of her life. As the Devil seduces her best friend, she becomes more obsessed with him and trying to figure out why he’s there in the first place. He offers power, but what would she need that for? What the book lacks in dialogue, it makes up in the stunning illustrations. Honestly, I was left with more questions that answers. But the story had me intrigued enough to want to continue reading this series. Thanks to and @01firstsecond @23rdstbooks for the e-ARC through @netgalley for review! This book is available now! What would tempt you to make a bargain with the devil? Is there anything you would be willing to give anything or almost anything for? I honestly don’t think I ever would. But, tbh I’ve never been in a situation do dire that I’ve ever had to consider it #bookreview #bookstagram #graphicnovel #claraandthedevil #23rdstreetbooks

Follow the tour at plingstackstours.com! 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐈𝐅 𝐘𝐎𝐔 🖼️ enjoy graphic novels 😢 have ever experienced PPD or PPP 📖 like memoirs 🧳 have moved several times in your life • 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 Lily isn’t sure where home is anymore. Her family is constantly on the move, resettling in different towns across Canada and, eventually, in Shanghai, China. Her father plays the role of primary caregiver while her mother is absent for long periods of time. When she reappears, her strange behavior turns Lily’s life upside down. As Lily enters her college years, she strives to better understand her family and her place in the world. But can she escape the inherited trauma passed down by her immigrant parents? • 𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒 I love graphic novels, and this one was absolutely fascinating. Written in short verse, and more pictures than words, I felt like I was beside the author as she told me her life story. As a mom myself, this was a sadder story for me, as I could relate to both the author and her mother. It must have been tough having a mom dealing with what appeared to be a bad case of PPP, and it upset me that the stigma of mental heath issues caused such a rift in their relationship. I liked that the story, while still actively happening today, ended on a more positive note and showed how getting help is healthy, and shouldn’t be stigmatized. I hope this author puts out more graphic novels in the future, whether memoir or fiction. She’s incredibly talented! Reposted from @therearenobadbooks • • • • • • 5 reasons to read + Character mini art 🦋5 stars 🌟 Very beautiful, true, and sad. The color palette is perfect for the art style, design and emotion of this story. A life from birth to adulthood. Navigating the hardships of being between cultures, in China and Toronto. A caring father and a mother with mental issues. The stigma and the switch to a more understanding (we hope) society that helps and accepts help. Very relatable, doesn't matter what ethnicity we are. Happy Release Day _____ I love graphic novels specially when they are inspired by the author's life experiences. ________ A poignant and vividly illustrated graphic memoir about a young woman's search for belonging as her immigrant family moves between Canada and China. Reposted from @debreadsalot 🎉UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN by Lily Kim Qian🎉 Graphic memoirs are some of my absolute favorite kinds of reads. The story is so important that it needs to be told in both words and artwork and it absolutely packs a punch while you read it. Lily has constantly moved her entire childhood. From all over Canada, to China and back, she’s lived in different parts of the world with her father because her mother has serious mental health issues. Because of the constant travel, she doesn’t feel like she belongs anywhere and she also worries that what happened to her mom might happen to her as well. She wants to be her own person but the fear of what is in her family’s past continues to haunt her. I very much appreciated how this book talks about depression very frankly. Any talk about mental health has such a bad stigma in Asian culture even to this day and people just don’t want to think about it much less discuss it. If there is any hint of mental illness, anything out of the ordinary that will cause you to lose face, it’s better to avoid it and pretend that it doesn’t exist. Of course this is the wrong way to handle it, and situations like Lily’s mom happen and people do not get the help they desperately need. Lily’s dad isn’t perfect but he was there for his daughter when she needed him and he did the best he could. It is very refreshing to read about a father who steps up and makes sure his child is protected and taken care of. I know that the bar is set really low for men sometimes but with Asian culture, this isn’t always a given so I very much was pleased reading this. I read this book pretty quickly and then went back and went through it again to savor the story and artwork. I really liked the art style and illustrations in this book and I feel like they fit the words so well. This book was so incredibly moving and I feel that it’s one of those books that needs to be a must read for everyone, no matter what age you are. Thank you so much to @topplingstackstours and @lkq.art for including me on the tour and for an advanced copy of the book! #UntilWeMeetAgain #LilyKimQian #FirstSecondBooks #TopplingStacksTours Macmill
