2017: It had been night on the long drive, a solid wall of blank thin air and unfamiliar monochromatic flat land. Then rosy Dawn revealed this awestruck intense playa sunrise, our first glimpse of the alien Black Rock Desert. I think about all our friends and chosen family I would not have met if we had not gone to Burning Man. I think about the confidence I have in my surprising physical abilities and endurance I uncovered after I worked for the event helping build.
Thank you for driving all night, @mxnightshade , for encouraging me to push out of my city kid comfort zone. I often joke I’d never gone real camping before and needed 70,000 of my closest pumpkin spice friends to help me try it. It has been the only place I felt the tension I hold in my body as a POC disappear after a day. My first three days there I cried, I did not realize I would ever recover that soft unguarded child’s soul who hadn’t experienced racist hatred yet.
This is my first week without you to lean on. This will be my first burn without the very complex emotions I had with you. I’m glad we were able to reconcile and reconnect. Wish I’d done it sooner. I’ll miss you and I said I’d love you always, and I meant it.
